No. Use lsmod on your new and old kernel systems to make sure that you're still using the same USB hci module. Some boards work with more than one, with differing rates of success.
OK, ta. I didn't have usb working before, having never needed it until now.
Can I simply copy the /lib/modules/2.2.20/pcmcia directory to /lib/modules/2.4.19/pcmcia [...]

No, the chances are very high that won't work. insmod will refuse to

the module; there's the evil way of insmod -f but you'll almost certainly
get
a bunch of undefined symbol errors if you try the. Just compile the same drivers under 2.4.19 and it'll work as well as before.

I agree with the other answer: No. Use lsmod on the old system to get the net module name and enable that in "make menuconfig" on the new kernel. Then, I think, it will all "just work".
I did this - the modules used were axnet_cs and i82365, I then remade the kernel using the net module that was axnet_cs, but there was nothing for i82365 (that i could see in the pcmcia section); this is now what the laptop is complaining about (the lack of i82365) hence my wonder if i could actually just stuff it all from one to the other. Sorry to ask daft Qs :-( Nothing "just works" with me. Jen

The file i82365 is part of the card services modules. It is liked in when card services load. To enable this component go into the general setup section then the pcmcia/card services section of the config. menus. You will see the options for various bus types.
