Sorry not to have made it. I did almost get Samba going last night though. In linux, the test smb.conf I did works fine, but windows says the network is unavailable when I have a look in Network Neighbourhood. Telnet, ping are fine so it isn't the networking. I suspect it may be the netbios name in linux? I get an error on boot in linux to do with setting the hostname, although it goes on to name the computer "mossey".

Can the linux machine mount its own smb export? That's always a good start...

Another common problem is that Windows98 has a default for sending non-plaintext passwords, so you can't get into the linux machine once you have found it. This can be fixed by installing the tweak from the Win98 cdrom in \tools\mtsutil\ptxt_on.inf
