I may have a book on it, I may have the online manual but can I get GIMP to heal a smudge on a photo? Not so far. Anyone got any tips? Many thanks.
Bev.
Depends on the smudge. If the smudge is in an area of a similar colour - e.g. a smudge in the sky, then..
Zoom in. Select the Clone Tool (looks like a rubber stamp) Somewhere near the smudge, find a colour/area that matches what you would like to replace the smudge. Control Click on that area. Then move the mouse over the smudge. Press the mouse button and hold it, and drag it over the smudge. The smudge will be replaced by a copy of the area around where you ctrl-clicked on.
Good luck

You probably need the Resynthesizer plugin for gimp: http://logarithmic.net/pfh/resynthesizer
This allows you to remove object from images but painting over the object with a pattern from the surrounding area.

Wow!
Just tried this. Works a treat.
It's available pre-built as in the ubuntu package manager (assuming you use Ubuntu). To use, load an image, make a small selection, then Filters>Enhance>Heal Selection. Bob's your uncle....
...or at least it worked for me when I tried it on some pictures taken blobs in the sky due to a mucky lens.
Good luck.

Just found it, thanks, and installed. I look forward to giving it a whirl.

To quote Steve. Wow! I had tried it another way but this works _far better_ and you don't need to fuss round the edges trying to make it blend it in, which wasn't successful to my fussy eye. Thank you.
Bev.
