I've finally got confirmation that www.anglian.lug.org.uk has come through. I've just gotten around to setting up the web space for that, so it's already for someone to upload their stuff.
The lug.org.uk mailing list should be available by today, but there appears to be some configuration problems at their end (I tried subscribing myself to the list, but got a configuration error back - I've emailed the chap and hopefully that'll get fixed fairly shortly). I'll post details when it's ready for use.
Email addresses at the anglian.lux.org.uk domain are almost ready - again, this looks like another configuration error (an MX record points to www.anglian.lug.org.uk and not anglian.lux.org.uk - I've pointed this out to the lug.org.uk chap and this should get fixed soon). If anyone wants an email forwarding address at anglian.lug.org.uk, just email me and I'll get those set-up on Monday.
M.

Excellent! I'll use this in the press release. Can you set up a press@anglia.lug.org.uk email address? If you're able to point it somewhere, you could point it at me for the time being.
Folks - have a look at http://www.cpc.uea.ac.uk/alug/pr01.html and let me know what you think. I'm still tweaking. It's mostly the release that James wrote earlier. If no-one complains, I'll start faxing it Monday? Gives us two weeks then to build up publicity.
Martyn - can you email me details for webspace access, so I can move templates, link management scripts up?
Finally, I suggest 2pm on Sunday 2nd for meeting - sound okay? We should probably work out some kind of plan of action - how about:
* 2pm - welcome, introductions etc * 2.15pm -> whenever, installations / linux troubleshooting * 3pm - anyone interested in demos of Gnome, KDE, mozilla? * 4pm - close, drink in the bar/pub? :-)))
Also - if there's any hefty software packages that people want to try but don't want to download, give me a shout - I can put together a fileserver of useful software (borrowing a bit of SuperJaNET's bandwidth :)
Travel arrangements - anyone vaguelly between Norwich and Woodbridge is welcome to a lift.
Andrew.

I dunno! I go away for a day and the new domain springs up as if by magic! Should I go away more often? ;)
Re: the new mailing list: I'm not going to give Martyn the current subscribers file, as some people complained when I added them to this list at the beginning. There is now an archive at the list at http://www.mth.uea.ac.uk/~h089/alug/list/ and I'll add all messages to the other list to it (from the time of this message), so you shouldn't miss anything.

Well, I'd say "Free" instead of "Open Source" in the first paragraph, but that reflects my politics more than anything ;)
Seriously, it looks fine.
templates, link management scripts up?
Please! I've bits springing up all over the place that want linking in... I dare say others have too?

I'd swap the troubleshoot and the demos, so that the open-ended item is the last one. Apart from the first bit, I take it we're going for an open-style meeting with bits of kit on tables around the room?

I'm quietly biting my tongue :-)

Or we could make the Jazz the first thing on the agenda! A few drinks and some good music would be a great way to kick things off...

Yep, fair enough. Kinda depends on how many people want demos really, although it would be good if we got some "not using linux, but wanting to see what it's all about" types at the meet.
On a side note, I'm thinking of writing to local computer companies to see if we can scrounge some goodies from them. I was thinking PC World, Software Warehouse, Time - any others in East Anglia worth hassling?
I thought I'd say something like....

Dear _______,
On Sunday 2nd May 1999 the Anglian Linux User Group will be holding its inaugural meeting. We are expecting a good crowd of people from all walks of life to attend what is sure to be an entertaining and informative introduction to linux.
As I'm sure you are aware, the free linux operating system has been gaining huge amounts of support both from computing hobbyists and professionals and the mainstream press. The Anglian Linux User Group is just one sign of the growing support for the operating system in this region.
I am writing to you to ask if you would be able to support this event. Sponsorship in whatever form of this event would be a very good way for your company to show support for your customers, which in turn I'm sure would encourage your customers to visit you more frequently.
Particular areas where help would be appreciated include:
* Software - copies of RedHat Linux or Applixware as sold by your company would be extremely welcome during the "installation" part of our meeting;
* Media - blank CDs would be useful, as we intend to provide visitors with copies of other free software such as Netscape.
* Financial - any donations to the Anglian Linux User Group would help us to cover our overheads and would ensure a glowing recommendation of your company!
Thank you for your time, and if you wish to discuss any ways you can help further, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Yours,
blah.
