Questions;
- Is KDE any easier to install?
Sorry, but what distro are you using? Is it RPM based? (rpm based= nothing's actually very easy to do). How come your distro didn't install these things?
If you were using debian you'd do: apt-get install task-gnome-apps task-gnome-net task-gnome-core
And that would have fetched, installed and configured Gnome for you.
You can do a similar thing with KDE, but since I dislike KDE, I'd never install it.
- Should I consider moving Gnome 2?
I wouldn't suggest it just yet unless you want to be bleeding edge. I'd stick with 1.4 for a little while yet.
- Is Sawfish any better than Enlightenment (and why :o) ) ?
Totally matter-of-opinion. You can have other window managers as well, such as windowmaker. My preference for gnome is Sawfish, but that's just me!
- Before I do anything else I want to install a Web browser but which one?
Mozilla! (again, personal opinion)

Sorry, I should have said (as a card-carrying paranoid masochist power-freak :o) ) that I'm not using a distro but I'm building everything from source (using LinuxFromScratch 3.3 as a base). Actually I'm using it as a way of learning more about all the various bits of GNU/Linux. Once I'm a bit happier that I know what I'm doing (that's likely to be a looong looong time :o) ) I shall probably install a disto (Debian is looking a favourite at the moment).
If you were using debian you'd do: apt-get install task-gnome-apps task-gnome-net task-gnome-core
Subsidiary question then, can I, and should I, get and install RPM or apt-get? Will they do things behind-my-back in-front-of-my-face that I might object to?
And thanks for the feedback.

Doesn't matter what distro as long he compiles and install. Better ;)

Wuss! Hell do you see KDE3 in Debian? Fat chance for a bit!

Hang on, did you try KDE 2?

It's fun to be on the bleedin' edge..

I prefer fluxbox/wmaker/sawfish (going off sawfish now since it wants to use GTK2.0 (which is probably is a good thing) but things are awkward with this machine right now)
Mozilla! (again, personal opinion)
Galeon ;) Konqueror or Opera.
Riccardo, sort out your email client, it keeps getting tailed off which I ain't going to fix ;)

Yes I agree, compiling for your box is the only suitable option, who wants pre-compiled code for a slower processor than you have?
