It was Steve Fosdicks suggestion of trying ps -ef that showed up the following: root 2487 1 0 20:09 ttyS0 00:00:00 /sbin/getty -w 115200 ttyS0 Commenting out the appropriate line in /etc/inittab solved the problem. Thanks for all your suggestions - we got there in the end. Barry Samuels
