Firefox's "guessing" is getting on my nerves and I'd really like to turn it off but I can't see anywhere in Preferences that would do it.
The way it works in the address box is just about OK, there you can hit Tab to select the first "guess". However elsewhere this facility doesn't seem to be available so you have to move to the mouse to do anything useful. The real nuisance is that the "guess" often obscures useful and relevant information.
Does anyone else find this 'feature' annoying and distracting?

How about Tools -> Options -> Advanced and under Accessibility and uncheck Find As You Type?

No, "Find As You Type isn't what I'm talking about. I quite like "Find As You Type" actually. "Find As You Type" is the search facility you get when you hit / and then enter a string to search for, as you enter more of the string the search matches more characters.
What I want to get rid of is the list that pops up (down?) below a text entry box when you type something in, offering various possible completions for what you're typing.

How about turning off Tools->Options->Privacy->Saved Form Information->Save Information I enter in web page forms and the Search Bar
Sounds like what you are talking about.

Ah, now that seems to work, thanks. I had looked at that but it didn't strike me as what I wanted. However turning off the option and clearing the saved information seems to have stopped the irritating (to me) drop downs.
When you say options have you looked in about::config (or is it about:config )? There are extra settings in there. Just type that in as an url...

Press the down arrow to access the "pop-up".

Sometimes, yes.
