wmtime seems to do what you want. It is part of the WindowMaker window manager, but Debian has let me install it painlessly and run it on my Gnome desktop.

Yes, you're right, it does seem to have what I want, thanks very much. It has compiled and installed painlessly and almost instantly on my Linux box. I'm not sure if it will be so easy on the Sun Sparc but we live in hope! I'm off on holiday so won't be able to try it on the Sun until after Easter.
