Hi Folks,
Is anyone running WordPerfect on Debian? If so then how did you install it?
I have obtained two Corel Linux WordPerfect 8.0 tarballs (guilg00.gz and guilguk0.gz) which I would like to install on my Debian 3.0 system. I have followed the instructions and copied them into a temp directory (/opt/wp80) then used "tar xvfz" to unpack them. Amongst the unpacked files is one called "Runme" which I ran ("./Runme") as root. It asks me if I have untared all the files. I reply "y". It says "Extracting files... Please wait.". It then comes up with an error message "Linux 2.4.18-bf2.4 not certified. Continue?" to which I reply "y". I then get literally screenfulls of error messages about files not being found. The error messages scroll past far to fast to read but I managed to catch the final screen's worth and have put it below. Anyone have a clue what is going wrong?
Thanks,
Ian.

My guess is that the filenames in the above error output are missing a prefix - that the installation program script was supposed to tack something on the front of each from a variable elsewhere in the program. Something like the following:
chmod og+w $base chmod og+w $base/wplib/.wpbuildc chmod og+w $base/wplib/.wpbuil.
This would give the "too few arguments" for the first chmod and "No such file or directory" for the next few.
It may be more useful to look at the first few error messages rather than the later ones, though I bet they all scrolled off the screen. You could try a second time and use xterm with the "logging" option on to capture the whole error log, or look at the script command.

Thanks for the hint Steve, I have now (I think) sucessfully installed WordPerfect but can't get it to run as it can't find "libXt.so.6" as I will explain in a mo in my reply to Tom Harding's message.
Ian.
All those error messages seem to refer to seeking files/directories hanging off the root directory ("/").
They should be going into /usr/local/wp8, or similar, I think. On my machine:
ls /usr/local/wp8 shbin10 wpbin wpgraphics wplib shlib10 wpexpdocs wplearn wpmacros
(these are all directories). However, I can't now remember whether, when I installed wp8 (years ago) I chose /usr/local/wp8 or whether it was chosen for me ... !! Your account suggests you unpacked them under /opt/wp80, which also seems a feasible place. Was there an option, during the install process, when the installer asked you to stated where you had unpacked them? Or should you 'cd' into /opt/wp80 before you continue?

Thanks for sharing your experience Ted. Yes, the install program does ask you where you wish to install the files (but doesn't suggest a default). I just typed in "/opt/wp80" as it seemed a reasonable location.
I have now (I think) managed to successfully install WordPerfect. If I look in "/opt/wp80" I can (like yourself) now see:
wilderbeast:/opt/wp80# ls shbin10 shlib10 wpbin wpexpdocs wpgraphics wplearn wplib wpmacros
and if I go into the wpbin directory I see:
wilderbeast:/opt/wp80# cd wpbin wilderbeast:/opt/wp80/wpbin# ls README README.demo README.install README.wpmagic xwp README.address README.errata README.lic README.wpsahelp xwpsahlp README.copy README.icon README.support wpmerge
However if I then try and start WordPerfect it refuses to start saying it cannot find "libXt.so.6":
wilderbeast:/opt/wp80/wpbin# ./xwp ./xwp: can't load library 'libXt.so.6'
Even though if I go into "/usr/X11R6/lib" I can see "libXt.so.6" is installed (I am running Debian 3.0) so I am a bit confused.

WordPerfect, if my memory serves me well (which it seldom does), depends on an old version of xlib6. My current version of Debian (Testing) uses xlib6 4.1 but I also have to have xlibs 3.3 installed to run WordPerfect.

Looking at my package manager it says I have xlibs 4.1.0-16 installed. Sadly it does not list a xlibs 3.3, can you remember where you got it from? Is it something I can "apt-get"? Would installing xlibs 3.3 overwrite/clash with my existing xlibs 4.1 or is there something I have to do first to enable them to co-exist? (Sorry if these questions seem a bit elementary but I haven't got the hang of Debian yet and haven't a clue about libraries)
Thanks for your help,

In Debian most packages have good dependency information so if two packages clash the package management tools will tell you so, offering to remove the old package that the package you are adding conflicts with. Be careful with this as you can end up removing large chunks of software like this after the tool had removed a library and everything that depends on it.

Thanks for your help,
Ian.
Looking in DSelect I have an OldLibs section which has a number of old libs versions including the one I mentioned. Do a search on xlibs. When I do that it finds the newest packages first but does find the old one eventually. That means that it is still in the Debian package system. In your case, of course, you should find it in the uninstalled packages list.
The old library should co-exist perfectly with the newer ones. Installing it did not cause me any problems.

It looks as though the "lib.so" cache is not complete, and "xwp" is not finding what it is looking for.
First, try
strings /etc/ld.so.cache | less
and search for "Xt". In my case, in the midst of all that I can see:
libXt.so.6 /usr/X11R6/lib/libXt.so.6 libXt.so.6 /usr/X386/lib/libXt.so.6 libXt.so.6 /usr/i486-linuxaout/lib/libXt.so.6
i.e. there are three different files for libXT.so.6
You should be able to find out what you have, either by looking in the several directories as above, or by doing a "locate libXt".
The "lib.so" cache is maintained by the command "ldconfig" (see "man ldconfig"). You may need to run this by hand, with appropriate arguments. If that gets it to work, you may need to modify the boot-time invocation of "ldconfig" (don't know where to find this on Debian ... ).
The WP executable "xwp" is an ELF binary, so you should not need "/usr/i486-linuxaout/lib/libXt.so.6" for this purpose.
Hope this is a useful pointer! Ted.

I have:

You should be able to find out what you have, either by looking in the several directories as above, or by doing a "locate libXt".

I have just had a look at "man ldconfig" and it has frightened the life out of me. Time for some strong coffee and loads of printouts!
Hope this is a useful pointer! Ted.
Thanks again for your help Ted,
Ian.

Interesting. I had previously noticed that dynamic linking seems to work much faster on Linux than on HP-UX, i.e. dynamic link programs load faster, so I wonder if this cache is part of the reason.
After my first experience with HP-UX's slow loading they introduced fastbind - a system of caching dynamic link information with the exectable to speed it up.

You can see what libraries it is wanting by running "ldd path/to/xwp".
Of course, part of your problem is the typical problem with having binary-only software on the system. If you remember "DLL version hell" from another platform, then this should be familiar to you.

Thanks for the helpful suggestion MJR. Sorry for the delay in replying but I was a bit busy with other things this afternoon.
If I run "ldd" I get the following output:
wildebeest:~# ldd /opt/wp80/wpbin/xwp libXt.so.6 => not found libX11.so.6 => not found libXpm.so.4 => not found libm.so.5 => /lib/libm.so.5 (0x40010000) libc.so.5 => /lib/libc.so.5 (0x40019000) /opt/wp80/wpbin/xwp: can't resolve symbol 'objectClass' /opt/wp80/wpbin/xwp: can't resolve symbol 'wmShellWidgetClass' /opt/wp80/wpbin/xwp: can't resolve symbol 'constraintWidgetClass' /opt/wp80/wpbin/xwp: can't resolve symbol '_XtInheritTranslations' /opt/wp80/wpbin/xwp: can't resolve symbol 'rectObjClass' /opt/wp80/wpbin/xwp: can't resolve symbol 'widgetClassRec' /opt/wp80/wpbin/xwp: can't resolve symbol 'XtShellStrings' /opt/wp80/wpbin/xwp: can't resolve symbol 'overrideShellWidgetClass' /opt/wp80/wpbin/xwp: can't resolve symbol 'overrideShellClassRec' /opt/wp80/wpbin/xwp: can't resolve symbol 'transientShellClassRec' /opt/wp80/wpbin/xwp: can't resolve symbol 'objectClassRec' /opt/wp80/wpbin/xwp: can't resolve symbol 'constraintClassRec' /opt/wp80/wpbin/xwp: can't resolve symbol 'applicationShellClassRec' /opt/wp80/wpbin/xwp: can't resolve symbol 'topLevelShellWidgetClass' /opt/wp80/wpbin/xwp: can't resolve symbol 'applicationShellWidgetClass' /opt/wp80/wpbin/xwp: can't resolve symbol 'coreWidgetClass' /opt/wp80/wpbin/xwp: can't resolve symbol 'widgetClass' /opt/wp80/wpbin/xwp: can't resolve symbol 'wmShellClassRec' /opt/wp80/wpbin/xwp: can't resolve symbol 'transientShellWidgetClass' /opt/wp80/wpbin/xwp: can't resolve symbol 'compositeWidgetClass' /opt/wp80/wpbin/xwp: can't resolve symbol 'XtStrings' /opt/wp80/wpbin/xwp: can't resolve symbol 'rectObjClassRec'
This seems to suggest that I am missing "libXt.so.6", "libX11.so.6" and "libXpm.so.4". If however I use the locate command I can see that these libraries are in fact already installed on my system in my "/usr/X11R6/lib" directory.
wildebeest:~# locate libXt /usr/lib/mozilla/libXt.so.6 /usr/X11R6/lib/libXt.so.6 /usr/X11R6/lib/libXt.so.6.0 /usr/X11R6/lib/libXtst.so.6 /usr/X11R6/lib/libXtst.so.6.1 wildebeest:~# locate libX11 /usr/X11R6/lib/libX11.so.6 /usr/X11R6/lib/libX11.so.6.2 wildebeest:~# locate libXpm /usr/X11R6/lib/libXpm.so.4 /usr/X11R6/lib/libXpm.so.4.11
And if I look in "/etc/ld.so.conf" I can see that it includes the path "/usr/X11R6/lib" where these "missing" library files are actually located.
wildebeest:~# cat /etc/ld.so.conf /usr/X11R6/lib /usr/lib/libc5-compat /lib/libc5-compat /usr/i486-linuxlibc1/lib
With my limited experience and understanding I am therefore a bit stuck knowing what to try next so any further help would be greatly appreciated.
Ian.

The last 2 imply that you need libc5 / glibc1 versions of the first 3, as someone correctly said before. They'll probably install into /usr/X11R6/lib/libc5-compat or similar. The ones in /usr/X11R6/lib are glibc2 versions on most current systems.
/opt/wp80/wpbin/xwp: can't resolve symbol 'objectClass'

These lines suggest to me that it also uses libraries in /opt/wp80 somewhere. I'd not worry about fixing that bit too much, as it probably sets LD_* environment variables to find them when it runs.

Gimme those tarballs.. Can you hook them up somewhere so I can nab them at work?

Sorry Craig but the WordPerfect tarballs are quite big and I don't think my ISP will allow me enough room to put them on my website. I will however be happy to burn them onto a CD (together with those for Corel Photo Paint if you are interested) and pop them to you in the post if you send me your snail mail address privately.
