Any thoughts on ALUG 5!
The beginning of December was mentioned at the last one.
Anybody volunteer hosting Laurie? Anybody?
Cheers,
BJ

I'm happy to host one after Xmas.

That'll be darned handy :) Essex meets ahoy :) Well that is unless I can persuade Luton to host one (but I seriously doubt that). I might even be able to make it :)
Dissertation blues atm - having problems getting linux to format 1.44 Mb disks on a LS120 diskdrive.
I suppose I better "reveal" what my dissertation is (bearing in mind its linux related). It is in essence, a "test" linux network solution (for teaching linux at Luton University (and shall be used next semester under my watchful eye). Idea is this: Each student is issued with a boot floppy that netboots a workstation in the "test" lab (yes I have been issued with a lab - 25 workstations), with a copy of redhat unique to them. To cut down on storage, the filessytem design is currently below:
All rw partitions are unique to user, ro is standardised from servers distribution.
/ - rw /etc - rw /dev - rw /lib - ro /sbin - ro /bin - ro /var - rw /usr - ro (except for /usr/local etc ) /usr/local - rw
Should allow users to install/configure software (when setup to install to /usr/local or similar), get a feel for linux, and screw it up the way we all do.
The crucial point is this system allows users work to be saved between practical sessions, as 50 students minimum are expected to enroll on the course. Oh ad it also facilitates me writing 12 practical sessions. But thats the easy bit really :)

With a little bit of tinkering you ca make / and /etc RO as well. ISTR that only mtab~ and issue (& modules.conf) are written, so it quite easy to do. The odd things that lie there and are RW, such as aliases, can generally be moved elsewhere. Look at /usr/lib/news/*, if you run nntp.
I have in the past run with only /var and /home mounted RW.

Since it will be on my doorstep I won't have an excuse I guess :-)
I can almost see the towers from here, well I would be able to if Paxmans works wasn't in the way !
