There's a front cover story in today's EDP about MS's upcoming charging policy for schools. This link should work, may wrap - http://www.edp24.co.uk/content/News/NewsStory.asp?Brand=EDPONLINE&Catego...
The local MP is saying it's going to cost too much to buy MS. We should all e-mail the EDP at EDPLetters@archant.co.uk (they're bound to print at least one) pointing out the availability, usability, and lack of cost associated with Linux. Send them this link - http://www.k12ltsp.org/ - or something like it to show previous success in schools. Let's all advocate our favourite OS and kick MS out of our schools. (Save on some tax £££s too while we're at it).

Sorry to put a foot in it do they know anything about open source? I'm sure they are a bit closed mind only to microsoft.
Bringing Linux..... er hang on.. shouldn't that be *nix? ;) into the mainstream schools etc would certainly save $$$. Hell at work we have save a lot of money where it ended up going on new hardwares ;)))

Unfortuantly but if you mention the fact Linux is free and they would think 'money saved!'. Then you explain the horror stories later ;)
Is anyone(or group) trying to educate en mass all the politicians (in local and central govenrment) on the subject of "better" computer strategy?

Yes. I was at a Cabinet Office event today, hearing them "talking the talk" about open standards, but they've not yet connected it to the related points about independent standards and free software. I think the time is right to get people thinking about this issue and they're ready for some new thinking.
The UK's Association For Free Software www.affs.org.uk is organising a "Free Software For Government" campaign. I think we've just hit a little bump in the road with the national level activity, but if you want to help, joining the AFFS and its mailing list would be really good. Actually forking over some money is good, as there are so many costs in campaigning. I'll be posting a bit more about things like today's event to the AFFS list when I've finished discussions resulting from it.

Let's reinforce the terrorist perception, eh?

Free software refers to freedom not cost. No software is free, especially not to educational establishments with all the special stresses they tend to put on kit.
I've already been asked to make contact with this MP in my AFFS role, www.affs.org.uk I'll keep you posted, but is your offer to help more than a joke, Craig? If so, please email me off-list so we can co-ordinate things. Thanks.
