Kudos to Jo and Paul for getting this to me. Anyone able to fill in the first bit?

For what it's worth, the wvdial problem is from when they have a terminal server backdoor login on their main dialup line because it's so unstable, but wvdial looks at that and thinks "oh, it's a terminal-style login". I've seen it before on another ISP.
