I have often looked in awe at IP Cameras, and we have recently done a job for a customer involving some, but they are sooo expensive, well more than £150.
I like the Dlink DCS 1000 et al.
I would like to build one using a spare miniITX box I have and a Logitech Web Cam Pro I have USB.
Couple of questions!
1. Does Linux support Logitech Web cam pro 2. Is there console web cam software that I coule use to upload to a local apache server? 3. Is there a premade distro designed for this use, or could I make one somehow?
I guess the ITX box needs to do the following!
1. Support the webcam 2. Have a NIC 3. Run apache for the images 4. All run off a compact flash card, no moving parts and all that!
err, I think thats it.

I have a Logitech Web Cam I have had occasion to use under Linux - More as an exercise to prove it could be done rather than for any real application. Most distros that I'm aware of do not support my particular model. There are a couple of sourceforge projects dedicated to the kernel level drivers.

Not as far as I know... However, it wouldn't take too much effort to adapt Morphix to your needs. Something I could assist with should you need any guidance.

Debian has a package called "webcam" that will do this. It works very well and will grab from a bttv supported camera device and upload files via ftp or ssh (iirc) or write it to a local filesystem. It will also allow you to date stamp the pics and have text on them etc.

Install Debian+apache+webcam make hardware work, configure apache, configure webcam software and hardware.

http://mia.ece.uic.edu/~papers/volans/quickcam.html tells you how to get it working in Redhat 9.0 so it looks like it is supported which is really good news coz I got one for my birthday a couple of weeks ago. Time for a play me thinks, if only I had the tome.
