I'm about to set up a web server on my home system so I can do some server side web development without having to be connected to the internet (I'm a poor dial-up only user ;o) ).
Its a Debian Woody system.
Haven't decided on what server side tools to use yet, initially it will be very basic.
Apache looks good but is it overkill in this situation?
Recommendations on suitable web server software please?
Keith

It depends on what the server is running and what tools you want to use. If you want something different, you may find boa, thttpd or a servlet engine a suitable alternative.

im running gentoo on my home serva.
apache2, mysqld, samba, etc - on a old 700mhz.
apache is relatively easy to set up, but there is a lot of power there should you want to tweak.
i would recommend it - i use a apache server, with `webroot`/ site1 a symlink to /shared/web/site1.co.uk /shared/web is shared over a samba link. its easy to use konqueror/kwrite/gimp to make the site, then simply visit http://server/site1 to see the server-parsed website.
hpe this helps!
