Greetings all!
I am having trouble connecting to
http://oald8.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com
which just hangs indefinitely for me. A traceroute
traceroute oald8.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com
proceeds reasonably rapidly down to step 11, which is where it hangs:
10 * 178.236.0.58 (178.236.0.58) 59.452 ms 178.236.3.129 (178.236.3.129) 64.219 ms
11 ec2-79-125-0-77.eu-west-1.compute.amazonaws.com (79.125.0.77) 57.412 ms ec2-79-125-0-73.eu-west-1.compute.amazonaws.com (79.125.0.73) 68.999 ms ec2-79-125-0-5.eu-west-1.compute.amazonaws.com (79.125.0.5) 57.819 ms 12 * * *
This may be a problem to do with routing via my ISP's DNS lookups. The ISP in question is zen.co.uk.
The server 178.236.0.58 at the preceding step (10) is (from whois):
inetnum: 178.236.0.0 - 178.236.7.255 netname: IE-AMAZON descr: Amazon Data Services Ireland
Any comments?
With thanks, Ted.

Works fine for me on BT.
traceroute oald8.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com
Uhhh... *bunu tells me to install one of two traceroutes. Why is there 2 and which is the proper one to install?
The program 'traceroute' can be found in the following packages: * inetutils-traceroute * traceroute

I resolve that to:
Non-authoritative answer: oald8.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com canonical name = oaldo.geo.geo-idm.fr. oaldo.geo.geo-idm.fr canonical name = fr.oaldo.geo-idm.fr. Name: fr.oaldo.geo-idm.fr Address: 176.34.182.155
But that just gets you to a default apache page and I'm not sure how to tell the server you want a specific VirtualHost.
Any comments?

Says it's up.

It's fronted by some geodns so different people will get different results. That Ted was ending up being resolved to something on ec2 I bet something has gone wrong in their provisioning/load balancing setup.
It also means that for many sites downforeveryoneorjustme is probably useless unless it carries out checks from different locations.

I have no problem reaching that site from here.
Traceroute doesn't really tell you a lot these days. Many routers and/or firewalls en-route to the destination may be set to drop/block UDP or ICMP echo packets without response so traceroute gets confused.

Seems to work OK here (Mint and Firefox) but wanted to set a handful of cookies - far more than there is any excuse to need. (More than eight! I allowed the first two - pro tem, - and refused the rest.)
/thought/ Who on earth would want to learn American English? (I think they mean US English... Ed)

Thanks to everyone for the replies -- which at least had the effect of encouraging me to think that the problems lay elsewhere!
As it happens, after repeated attempts spread over the last several hours, now suddenly that website http://oald8.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com is coming up very quickly, and all is well.
I had been trying 3 of my machines, with iceweasel/firefox, plus opera on one of them, and also IE in my virtual box machine, with no luck. Then, suddenly, they all successfully loaded that site.
There had also been problems with CambridgeNews some "slideshows", also now resolved.
So it does look as though something was blocking the pipes down the line! (However, traceroute is not getting any further ... ).
Best wishes to all, Ted.

Do a name lookup now for that hostname (host, nslookup, even ping will tell you) to get the ip address I suspect that you got a bad DNS record for that site and it expired and then you got a working one.
