Hi All
I'm still having lots of wifi and 3G card related problems with my Lenovo T520 and Linux Mint 13 (I though it was 12, it was 13).
Does anyone have a similar machine (or even the same machine) that they're successfully working with? Maybe I could pick your brains at one of the pub meets?
I have a Lenovo T510. I run Arch on it.
iirc I had some wireless problems in the past to do with the Centrino driver. What wireless card do you have?

Hi Jude
(My eldest Son is called Jude, btw! Still quite an uncommon name...)

I haven't tried Arch yet.

The card is an:
Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1000.
I still have Linux Mint 13 installed and the card connects to my wireless router without any problem, but no data flows unless I set the wireless router mode to 11g rather than the default setting of Mixed(11b+11g+11n). Obviously that's fine if I only use my wireless network at home, but most other routers appear to be setup in mixed mode too and I can't change them of course!
I'm hoping the problem with my 3G is the same problem and I can fix two birds with one stone.

Nice laptop, I have the W510 which is a slightly older but very similar chassis.
As Jude says given this model comes with various wifi options we need to know exactly what wifi card is fitted. If you run lspci and look for the wireless and 3G cards in there and send us the relevant lines.
Also running lsmod might be useful as it will tell us what modules you are currently using (some cards can work with several modules)

Yeah, thanks. Lenovo/IBM seam to get a bad press, but I've had a T42 in the past and my T60 is still going strong (5 years old) but a bit slow. They're solid and performant. I don't know what more you can ask for!
As Jude says given this model comes with various wifi options we need to know exactly what wifi card is fitted.
Yes, I wish I'd looked into it more before I bought now (Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1000).
If you run lspci and look for the wireless and 3G cards in there and send us the relevant lines.
Great! I will. I don't have the machine with me today (still using the T60 for the time being), but I'll send this information tonight.
Also running lsmod might be useful as it will tell us what modules you are currently using (some cards can work with several modules)
I'll do that too.

Which driver is in use? I had to disable N mode on the Intel wireless on my W500 due to problems.
See: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/939218
I've added the options iwlwifi 11n_disable=1 to fix the problem, but I think it's fixed in later kernels than that which I'm running.
thanks Adam

Basic question, but how do I find out?

I think by issuing the command lsmod at a prompt, then look for the name of your network card in the output.

So, my Kernel is 3.2.0.23-generic and my iwlwifi.ko (no gz!!) is from April 11. So it would certainly appear older than yours.

There's a command called dmesg which shows the output from the kernel, quite often you'll get messages in there relating to problems.
I'd suggest anyone having this problem tries the fix I posted a link to earlier in the thread and see if it fixes the problem for them. If it does then it's a kernel/driver bug.

Hi Adam
See: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/939218
I wish I'd looked at this properly before!
This fixed my problem:
1) Create a file at /etc/modprobe.d/intel_11n_disable.conf containing this one line: options iwlwifi 11n_disable=1
2) Run this command: sudo update-initramfs -u
3) Reboot
Thanks to everyone who helped! Especially Adam and Jude. I haven't tried the 3G card again yet....

So the good news is that I had a full evening of nice fast wifi with my T520 and Linux Mint. It would therefore appear my problem really is fixed.
However, my 3G card (HSDPA USB Stick MF627) appears to connect to the 4 network, but still no data flows. Can anyone tell me where i should start looking?

I've got one of those sticks, it "just works". How are you managing the connection? Network Manager? Are you 100% certain that the settings in there are correct?
What happens if you run ifconfig when it says it's working? Has another interface appeared for the data device? Does it have an ip address etc.?
Also... what is the 4 network? 1 better than Three? :)

Yes, it's always just worked for me in the past.

Yes.

I copied them from the Linux Mint 12 setup on my T60....

I've just been to Cafe Waring with my laptop and the wireless doesn't work in Linux Mint, but it does in Windows. Also, my 3G card doesn't work in Windows either!
Adam, what's the make and model of your 3G card? Maybe it's time to upgrade?

Err, exactly the same as yours. The tests you did yesterday indicate that it was passing some traffic as if it wasn't you wouldn't have been able to ping 8.8.8.8 (although, your wifi was disabled at the time or not?). I'd suggest that maybe the dns settings are not getting set correctly?
