Hi I have been attempting to install Linux on my AMD 3.4 GHz 64, on Ubuntu/Kubuntu 64, the X server fails to start/crashes, likewise on Debian 64, with Fedora 64 screen starts O.K. but mouse pointer disappears at logon. Suse 10.0 installs O.K. in i386 mode, but fails to find sound (Intel ICH with ALC 655) Kubuntu installs O.K. in i386 mode and finds everything. likewise Debian i386 Kororaa (gentoo) i386 installs O.K. and gives correct Nvidia driver and even 1600x screen System has onboard Nvidia 6100, and 1GB ram. Has anybody any suggestions for a 64 bit system, or ideas how to get a working 64 bit system or any other (Linux) operating system to try please. Kind Regards - Nick Daniels

Many thanks Laurie. Now downloaded, and will have a go, was very impressed with Kororaa CD when installed, have been running Suse for about seven years, but feel a need for change. Suse 10.1 final will be released tomorrow, but will try Gentoo first and possibly stay with it. Kind Regards - Nick Daniels

I like Gentoo, but it can be a challenge! I'm not at all sure about this new graphical install though, as it seems to make it harder for multiple installs on the same hardware (need more time to play). I'd be interested to know how you get on.

Hi Laurie. Have installed from graphical installer on separate disc. It is fast, very fast, only trouble is with audio , but will go back to that tomorrow, the package I need is masked. Going to leave it for a day as have been installing systems for three days. I will stay with it, if I cannot get onboard audio working will fit PCI card. Odd thing, all other 64 bit distros give me "no screens" or maximum resolution of 600x800, this came up at 1600 etc.same as Kororaa. Many thanks for help Regards - Nick Daniels
Fancy giving Ubuntu Dapper 64-bit a try? It's not finished yet, but might have a fix for the strange bugs you are experiencing.
You can get a .iso file for Dapper from here: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/6.06/flight-7/

Hi Richard I tried the Dapper release before this one and got no working xserver, (even with a lot of work) might be something about my onboard graphics??? Dapper i386 works fine, same as Debian i386, seem that just the 64 bit versions do not give"screens" , except Gentoo. Any ideas would be appreciated Video = NVIDIA GeForce 6100 GPU PS just noticed the board was advertised as having no agp slot- it has, might be worth putting an older Nvidia card in. The only time I can get an Xserver running other than Gentoo (in 64 bit) it comes up at 600x800 in very low resolution So why is Gentoo giving me full 1600 resolution (and i386 distros 1024x 2048)? Kind regards -Nick Daniels

I' no expert on these sorts of things, but how well is the kernel frame buffer working? If you boot with vga=791 (for example) do you get a 1027x768 terminal? i.e. is it specifically an X problem?

Hi Richard an all I just downloaded the latest Dapper 64 (Kubuntu), my mistake, but got the one with the desktop installer, this crashed immediately on hitting installer.
On all distros with a graphical installer, works O.K. with graphical installer and works O.K. until GDM, KDM, then the screen crashes, or "no screens found" startx produces same results.
Plugged in yesterdays Fedora 5 x 64 disc, , basic Gnome installation, got updates (700MB +) still the same, mouse pointer still disappears at GDM (also seems slow)
Gentoo seems the best so far but sound still not working, my sound driver is "hard masked" and due for removal next week, also alsa-drivers are masked. Will persist with Gentoo on spare disc. Kororaa (Version 0.2) , "Gentoo", still seams fastest although not 64bit and loads all drivers including Nvidia and has xgl, installs in 8 minutes
Maybe loading Nvidia drivers into Ubuntu then booting into "screen" might cure problem? not sure if it is possible. But on the rare occasions I have got a screen it looks like the old windows screen before any video drivers are installed.
Many thanks for all the help Kind Regards - Nick Daniels
For 64bit Linux, Gentoo works the best. You need to scratch your head around if you use Fedora.
Nick has 1Gigabyte of RAM, and that is good. If you run 64bit OS, you really want 1 gigabyte minimum, as things do work slow if you only have 512Mb.
