I guess we'll just have to get the North American version then!!
ALUG5? Laurie was talking about coinsiding it with another bash. Not sure what the plan is though?

Subject: [alug] Corel Linux Deluxe not for Europe
Corel has struct a licencing problem with 3rd-party non-GPLed software included in it's forthcoming Deluxe Linux distribution and as such it cannot be distributed "over the pond".
This should make for an interesting discussion over freedom/licencing.

Btw, are we calling ALUG #5 a January date now, it's a little late for December now..?

No plan, but I suggested we might like to run it on Sunday 23 Jan, which is the same Sunday as the Half-Life/TFC/Unreal Tournament LAN party. We're shut for the first two weeks in Jan anyway.
Cheers, Laurie.

Hi
Has anyone managed to get Localtel/Screaming.net working with linux & diald?? If so could you post your pppscript?? I've tried using pppsetup (which worked fine for freeserve) but I'm pulling the required bits of info from the winblows .ins file which screaming sent me which is not ideal...
Cheers

Apart from gathering DNS names, phone number and the like, the thing that trips most UK people up when they try to get pppd working is that most UK ISPs use CHAP authentication. To get his to work there are two key things yu must do:
1. Prevent your pppd from asking the ISP to authenticate itself. To stop this add noauth to your pppd script.
2. Tell the ISP you user name so it can work out for itself what your encrypted pass word should be when you send it. To do this add - user myusername - to your pppd script (no dashes required)
THis way I have succesfully fot thefree.net to work.

Another good ISP is callnet0800 ( http://www.callnet0800.com/ ) free 24/7 net access with a one hour kick, And 30% off all calls with a prefix no need to change your telephone service provider. i must off had over £100 free calls to the net in the past month though so sadly if everyone does the same I feel they may go bankrupt:( But this also means upgrading to Debian potato is now feasable.

Of course, recent pppd supports the "usepeerdns" option which can combine nicely with an ip-up scipt to rewrite your resolv.conf. man pppd for details if yours supports it.

What's wrong with kppp as a pppd front end? Needs very little tweaking. Had virtually no problems with perhaps fifteen ISPs. Exception being TescoNet. (no great deal). Too lazy to find out why Callnet0800 baulks at a PAP/CHAP login - there seems to be an anomaly with my username suffix. It works fine with a scripted login tho'.
Roll on unsubsidized unmetered net access.

kppp is fine for manual dial-out, but pppd does dial-on-demand, which I need. Have you find a way to make kppp do d-o-d?
Cheers, Laurie.
