Hi,
Does anyone use Linux based genealogy software?
In particular I am trying to find a Linux based program that will allow me to create/edit/import/export ".ged" GEDCOM files.
Best wishes, Sagr
I haven't actually used it myself but I remember seeing an article somewhere saying that gramps would do this.
There is also geneweb that can be used to provide an interactive web interface to ged files.
Oh and welcome to to ALUG :)

Thanks for mentioning Gramps. I have just had a look at: http://www.gramps-project.org and it certainly looks like it may be worth my while looking further into this and trying to install it. The fact that it is available in both Linux and M$ Windows versions may also come in handy until we are able to completely switch over to Linux as our Researchers can start getting a feel for the Windows version now so hopefully making the future transition to Linux less painful.

Yes; geneweb looks quite interesting too. http://geneweb.sourceforge.net/about.php Once again I like the fact it is available in both M$ Windows and Linux versions. Thanks for mentioning it.
I think I will probably start experimenting with Gramps first, set it up on a test PC, and see what the Researchers think of it.
Thanks for your suggestions.
Sagr.
Hi,
I use PHPGedView (http://www.phpgedview.net/) with some success, but the tree is really the realm of my father so I can't tell you much about useability or functionality.
I have recently re-built our site at https://tree.rippon.me.uk and haven't done any of the UI customisations as yet but feel free to take a look.
Jim

PHPGedView looks a VERY interesting program. Thanks for mentioning it and showing me an example of it in use. It is much appreciated. I am not however sure if it is exactly what I am after as, from first glance, the software seems to create a single Family Tree which multiple people can access and edit over the internet. This is a wonderful idea allowing dispersed members of a family to research a single shared Family Tree.
Unfortunately my needs are for Linux software which a single user can use to create and edit several (say up to 50) completely unrelated and separate Family Trees and which will also allow the data from the individual Family Trees to be exported as .ged GEDCOM files.
Thanks once again for your reply and for showing me an example of the software in use.
