Hi folks,
Further to my earlier message; If I take the memory card out of the camera and insert into USB card reader - the USB driver recognises it as a new drive and the data is accessible. Using the camera supplied USB cable, the camera software has to be installed or it is not recognised.

Altough most cameras seem to appear as USB storage devices, the cheap one I just got didn't so I used gphoto to extract the pictures from it instead. gphoto supports an impressive list of cameras - install it first then do gphoto2 --list-cameras
