Hello all,
Just thought I'd introduce myself. My name is Daniel, and I'm a Linux User. </aa>
Just wondering when the next meeting was likely to be, and where. I noticed that the previous meets seemed to centre around the more easterly parts of Anglia; is that where most of the ALUG members are?
If not, how about trying a meet somewhere closer to Cambridge or Ely?
Just an idea.

I'm not sure, but it's certainly the part that doesn't have anyone else near it. I know that we have quite a few active members around Cambs and West Norfolk now, so we've been talking about meeting in Ely soon.

Yes, let's try to find somewhere in Ely. I remember discussing possible dates for a fact finding pub cra^W^W trip with Kirsty and Adam at the last meeting and I think Saturday 30th August was a good date. Is it good for others? Is a weekday evening better? Who else is likely to go?

Good morning Daniel, how are you doing now?

The next meeting is in Elmswell which is not far from Cambridge if you have some kind of motorised transport, but it is the day after the Debian birthday party in Cambridge which may or may not be a good thing :)

We do have a plan to try and find a venue in Ely, and I did mean to find out how much a room in CRC on Kings Hedges road would cost for an afternoon but have not got around to it yet. If you know of anywhere then let us know.

Isn't Elmswell out past Bury St Edmonds (coming from Cambridge-way) ?
As for the day after the Cambridge Debian meet, I shall be entertaining guests so I can't make that :-(

I guess it all depends what size of group you expect to turn up. If it's purely a social thing, then there are plenty of pubs in Ely and Cambridge. If we want a more structured meeting with a speaker or whatever, then we'll need to think harder.

We have relatives at Foulden (a little village about 5 miles to the east of Downham Market). They have just refurbished their village hall and the village also has a pub ( :o) ). I believe it would cost us about ?12 to rent it for an afternoon. I'm sure we could organize lifts to/from the station at Downham if required.
Would this be a suitable venue for a meeting nearer to the Cambridge/Newmarket area?
Regards,
Keith ____________ The more you wonder why it's so, the more it keeps on happening.

Hrm, that's probably slightly better in terms of westerlyness, but not particularly better in terms of accessibility for non-drivers.
I shall have a ponder

I have to agree. It would be good for a weekend "bring your kit" meeting, but I think we have to get to know who's out here before organising it.

I'd guess a social thing as a start, until one of the older groups shows us the way to do structured speaker-based meetings. I'm very reluctant to meet in Cambridge yet, as they already have a LUG that wasn't welcoming to some of us in the past.
Where in Ely shall we start and when?

Yeah, I wasn't impressed by CamLUG

Hmm, how about 'The Fountain'... tonight at 8pm?
(can you tell I'm bored?)

I'm not sure I can be there... can we try at least a week's notice? Although next Thursday's Scheme-UK if I'm right, so I'll not be there.
Other known dates: Thu 14th is an ALUG-Norwich meeting, Sat 16th Debian Cambridge BBQ ( http://the.earth.li/~huggie/cgi-bin/moin/Debian10thBirthday and people with crash space near camb especially welcome, I think), Sun 17th Elmswell Revolution-OS screening, Thu 28th Peterborough LUG (maybe). Are there more?

Let's kick this: What's the one near the station, by the river? Is it any good, or should we go straight to the Fountain? How about next Friday or the following Thursday at half-six? Daniel? Adam? Kirsty? Jen? Anyone else near Ely?

That's the Cutter. It's okay, if a bit chainpubby. Thursdays are better for me, since Fridays often are part of the weekend in terms of evening usage, and I tend to have weekends booked up.
Which Thursday are we talking about then? Next week is the 14th.

Sounds good to me. Start at the Cutter, arrive the Fountain at 8, maybe looking in at anywhere else along the way? I'll bring a penguin.

What time at the Cutter then?

1830. I think my train arrives 1810 and ones from Camb do at 1808 and 1822 or so. Not sure about the Anglia ones from Nch/Pboro/Ips, but not sure if anyone will be using them to get there?
Memory of a goldfish, me. Did you mention a possible venue for a "bring kit" meeting hired by the 3 hours, or was that someone else? Memory of a goldfish, me.

Sounds good. I'll try to remember.

There is the old dispensory in Ely. I can't find the details right now, but I guess if you rang Ely council they could tell you them. That's where I got them from last time.

Trust Ely for its city council to be at parish level! That page doesn't mention the old dispensary and their offices are closed until Monday now. I suspect it would be quicker if you can find the details you had :-(

Next Thursday I am in Narch for the evening meeting there, next day my car is in garage in Narch, then on the Saturday is the Debian BBQ in Cam, then we have Alug meet the next day.... Perhaps we call the following Thursday at half-six (actually I will be later as I have to go Reach > Cambridge (to collect Kirsty)
Ely...) as that weekend is already more than a little full!
