Morning all, Starting to get into the world of creating my own CD's and as my new laptop doesn't have a floppy drive, I need to start writing data CD's. Can anybody recommend CD-writing software (and CD-RW software if there is a difference) for Linux? I run Gentoo over a blistering 56k dial-up modem so am looking for a few recommendations before I unleash the power of the modem ;-)

Take a look at gcombust. It is fast and simple to use. None of that fancy crap ;)

Whatever frontend you get you'll need cdrecord and mkisofs or mkhybridfs. As frontends go, XCDRoast, although somewhat unintuitive, works quite well.

You could think of getting an external rack which will take a number of different types of drives - ViPowER (http://www.vipower.com) make a range, and you can get them in IDE and Wide SCSI.
USB; hub; TV/FM capture; Trays for 2·5" and 3·5" HDDs and other storage devices; IDE to PCMCIA/ATA card reader; smart cable; digital film reader; LS 120; Zip; MO; TR-4 tape - to name but a few.
I use an external burner on my Winbox and I hope soon to be able to move it to the Penguinbox.
There are a lot of solutions other than burning your data CDs when something smaller might be more flexible - in addition, of course.
However, as to a writer to run in Linux, I wouldn't like to say. Yet.
