Is there any Linux application that will handle MS Word .docx files successfully?
A .dox file is a compressed archive of .xml files but unpacking it doesn't really produce anything very usable.

... er, but isn't docx-converter.com an MS Windows program, not much help on a Linux box.
... and OpenOffice.org 3 is still in beta I guess so isn't really an easy option, i.e. a bit OTT for just opening a document.
I think I'll just say that .docx files are even more unacceptable than ordinary MS Word .doc files.

The openoffice.org website says that they released 3.0 on 13th October 2008.

FWIW OOo 2.4 on my Ubuntu desktop has handled several docx files for me successfully. I don't recall having installed any docx support manually, but could be wrong.

I'll have another try then. I'm "between systems" with OpenOffice 2.3 on my still currently main system but OpenOffice 2.4 on my newer system that I'm moving to. The trouble is that my E-Mail is still on the older system and that's where the .docx file arrived.

I think OOo 3 is needed on Windows to open .docx but some distros compiled in the .docx support to 2.4 as well (I'm probably wrong).
There's a certain satisfaction being the only one in the office who can open .docx files, given that I'm the only one running a non-MS O/S and non-MS office software.

OK, I've taken another look and (being a command line junkie) I'm totally confused. It offers me a download which is a .zip file and when I download it it unpacks and gives me a file called docx-converter.wdgt and I haven't a clue what to do with that.

OK, but it's not available as a packaged update for many (any?) main line Linux distributions yet is it? As I said it seems a bit OTT to install the whole of OpenOffice outside my standard package manager just to let me open .docx files.

It's an online tool. Upload your file, and they'll email you the conversion ...

For some value of success: try OpenOffice.org 3 or unpack the zip and rip the text out of the XML content file.
I'm surprised, but it seems that MS have managed to make simpler doc files even bigger and less useful. It does have the good point of being incompatible with earlier MS Officer versions, so some of my heavy-MS-user associates are now emailing RTF, PDF or text without me asking! I wonder how long that will last...
