A bit off topic perhaps but I thought I'd ask you lot. Domain name hosting. Ted might be puzzled by this since I recommended 1&1 a while ago now. They haven't been a bother but it looks like I should think about transferring things for various reasons. Who out there is cheap and reliable? How do you find out exactly how much any one package will cost per year? I'm just talking about a domain name and related email address.

My domains are also with Mythic.
(Also Brett Parker of this parish works for them. Which you could consider a point in favour or a point against; I consider it a point in favour.)

Mine too! (and as a responsible employee of the company, I even pay them full price for them :) )

Awww - thanks :)
+1 for Mythic beasts, I've been using them for a few years without any issues.

I know people who are signed up with Mythic Beasts and they do indeed sound utterly fab and lovely (plus local). I've l also just looked at the link Jenny posted and tbh, I never knew they did 'simple' domain name stuff. I always thought it was serious techie stuff. How wrong can I be? Hmm. Will given them some serious thought. Ta.

FWIW I use two companies:-
TsoHost - yes, they're a full-blown web hosting company but they do domains and their support is outstanding
Gandi - Until recently I used them only for domain registrations but I have a virtual server with them now as well

Another vote for Mythic Beasts from me too. By far the easiest-to-use DNS control panel I've come across, that's what does it for me. In general, a no-surprises service.

I run a small hosting business that can offer this sort of service. Http://www.awke.co.uk

I use 123-reg https://www.123-reg.co.uk. Used them for years with no problem. Prices are on their site.

I'm planning to move my domains away from 123-reg as they have recently introduced a £9.99+VAT charge (per domain) to change the ISP tag without notifying their customers.

Nominet charge £12 +vat for this.

Mythic don't charge this...
Just saying :)

Yes, nominet charges about £10+VAT, but that allows a bulk transfer, so if one has more than one domain then it is still cheaper. Also, it gives me the (debatable) satisfaction not to give the money to 123-reg; both mythic beast and gandi don't seem to charge this fee to move a domain.
Cheers Thomas
I just noticed this myself so I withdraw my recommendation!
I was going to transfer a domain to a registrar recommended here to give it a trial and came across the £9.99 fee. So it looks like I'll be doing a bulk transfer too.

Absolutely, one small fee and get them as over to Mythic!
Cheers, BJ
I'm logged into Nominet at the moment and it says £12 including VAT. Looks like a simple process to do a bulk transfer :)

Thanks for the feed-back. I wanted to wait a month or so until one domain comes close to be due for renewal, but I might as well give it a go tonight; that gives me some buffer time if something doesn't work out.
Cheers Thomas

I use two companies - daily.co.uk and bytemark.co.uk. Bytemark get my vote for technical competence and excellent support. They also host my DNS (for all my domains, including the ones registered with daily).
I agree with your decision to move from 1and1. They were a disaster for me and made the move away (to daily where I initially had a couple of VMs) unnecessarily complicated. I have decided against moving the registration of all my domains to bytemark simply because it is too risky. I lost one domain for 11 days once (see https://baldric.net/2009/08/02/dns-failure-a-cautionary-tale/ ) and do not want that to happen again.
