Hello All,
I am planning on purchasing a laptop for my step-son who is a Linux fan (I run Linux Mint on the 'family' laptop). I imagine I will be buying something with Windows pre-installed.
Does anyone know whether it is still possible to reclaim the cost of the Windows licence that comes pre-installed? Do I claim this back from Microsoft or the manufacturer?
Rgds, Nick.

So, not a mac then :)

Microsoft state, clearly, that any refunds for pre-installed versions of windows are down to the hardware manufacturers, not them. And it's at the hardware manufacturers disgression. So, the only way to find out is to ask whoever makes the laptop... and then they'll maybe offer you £20. I feel these days that it's really not worth the hoop jumping for the perceived saving.

Try ebuyer. They sell reasonable laptops without windows (no OS at all).

(Not sure of the actual colour here....)

I recall a successful court case a while back where the buyer successfully sued the retail supplier. But good luck with that.

I've bought a few Zoostorm laptops from eBuyer. They brand them as eBuyer Special Value or similar. They are manufactured by Clevo and are normally pretty well built. I used one for about 3 years after my trusty Dell M60 workstation died. It had a lot to live up to but performed very well with Ubuntu then Mint on it. My daughter has one which gets severe abuse and is still works okay, although I have put at least 3 new screens in it for her!
Cheers, BJ

That's good to hear. I bought one back in July (for a penny short of 270 UKP). I think it was a bargain given the spec (Intel Pentium DC B980 2.4GHz, 8GB RAM, 500GB HDD, 15.6" display, DVDRW). My only beef is that the keyboard is a bit "clicketty". Mine wasn't "pink".

I'm ure my daughter would have loved a pink one if they had been available. I wonder if the pink one's screens break as easily? :)
