So I have two DVD's I'd like to watch. However, computer says:

Which I guess is because it's trying to boot from it. (Or is that a red herring?) So what do I do? I have googled and not got very far except installing xine which gets me the menu options but can't play the film which is all I wish to do.

Assuming you have never played a DVD on your PC before you will most likely need to install the software described here.
