When will people learn? I just had to spend £12000 on behalf of my company to buy 70 licenses for Office XP when our computers can't handle it so we're on Office 97. But they won't let us buy '97 licenses. GREED, anyone?
At college we had a challenge to give a design for a computer room and to see who could do it cheapest, I beat everyone else by over 33000ukp just by using linux, I spent more on hw!
I have 2 words for this; OPEN SOURCE. Products such as word processors just don't improve that greatly from
release to release. For most office purposes all they are is a glorified typewriter. Why spend the cash? >:|
For most people they spend to much time fiddling with presentation in word, using LaTeX speeds up the work no end as you type the text in and simply mark it up as to how it should be, saved me hours on my college work!
Thanks

PS can you forward this to the list if it doesn't get to the list properly?

I think it should not be underestimated how much effect how something looks has on the reader. I would suggest that it is for this reason that much SPAM is sent in HTML only - because those sending it conceive it with colour and graphics and can't imagine what it would look like otherwise.
That said, I concur with David that divorcing thinking about presentation from thinking about content can speed document writing. My recent experience with XML bore this out - it took a whole evening of fiddling about to get the two style sheets just as I wanted them, but writing the documents is now much faster than it was - I naturally think of the document in terms of what the paragraph I'm writing means rather than what font it should be displayed in etc.
Even when using a WYSIWYG word processor one would be well advised to make maximum use of stylesheets though some wordprocessors could make these a little easier to use.

Also you can validate that an email arrived with a simple HTML request for a cgi application. That way validating your read rate, if you want to sell the email address this must be an important value. I do belive since I have stoped supporting HTML email my spam rate has gone down hudgely
