Does anyone on the list know of a reliable ISP providing unmetered access still using an 0800 dial in number?
Not 0800, but in addition to 2 08089933xxxx and an 08089916xxxx number, Freeserve Anytime have a 162 number which BT are compelled to provide access to, as it leaves Energis at the first exchange.
Of course, you probably know all of the good and bad of Freeserve -- or you can find out on Google groups.

I already told John about this in an unrelated private mail but if you subscribe to freeserve the first month is free (before October 31st) and you can cancel at any time. You will also get to see if BT are lying about the 0808 numbers not working because of the exchange or if they are only screwing there own service.
