Following on from my email earlier.
Does anyone know where I can find a copy of the specification for 19 inch racks. A search on google renders lots of adverts for ATA flight cases.
Thanks

Errrrm, no but I do know that 19 racks can all be subtley different from each other so that once you have put the shelves in and try to put the computers in you have to take them apart again!
You could try asking Dataracks, http://www.dataracks.co.uk (I think, if not try .com)

I am looking at rack mounted cases.

It worked, but they are far too expensive. I am looking at a set of rails from Middle atlantic and some careful wood work.
When do people think TFT screens will be affordable?
Thanks

Yeah, but you could ask them the specs, although if you have the rails then you don't need any further information as there are no rules on how racks are built!

How big and what do you class as affordable?

Ok, I will probably get a rack blanking plate from an audio shop and use that as a guide. Do you know if I need rear rails as well?
Are you up for the LBW yet?

You will need rear rails to hold the shelves up! unless you have some master plan that does away with them ;-) You won't want to bother with mounting the rears of the machines on rails put them on shelves it will save loads of bother!

I'll mail you offlist about this.

Machines on shelves? whats the point of having a rack mount chassis and putting it on a shelf?

Well, if you don't have shelves then you will find that your computers will increase their natural density overnight :-) (as in they will be in a heap on the floor) the racks are designed to make sure they are held securely on the shelves. If you want them to be secured without shelves then you will have to be prepared to have a seperate rack for each type of machine. Welcome to the world of 19" rackmount kit, where you should be working to a standard but whos standard nobody knows! each machine will have a different depth, some of them won't even have mounting points on the back.
Trust me, repeat 10 times *I need shelves for my rackmount computers*
