I have done this before but I think I may need a little help. Finally got round to wresting the info from my old laptop. (Note that if the keyboard is stuffed, clicking on the human figure on the top right of the screen brings up an on-screen keyboard. You probably know this, but I pass it on anyway.) But to the point of this email. Stuck the usb drive in which has Mint on it and powered the laptop up. Clicked on ESC as it said that would bring the boot menu up. It did not. Not fast enough? What speed should I aim for next time? I found out how to shutdown before it got me all the way through the Windows set up so that's something. Thanks in advance. Bev.

I have a newish inexpensive windows laptop, referred to as a "cloudbook" by ASUS, which I tossed to one side because it has become increasingly difficult to do anything at the level below the intended high level operating system. I had serious trouble with this one even after I'd already nuked microsoft from it, so you definitely are far from alone in your frustration. I'll have a go at it again this weekend since I'm thinking about it. Good luck with your quest.

Good morning Susan, That looks like yet another cheap and "disposable" device from Asus. One like Chromebook or Chromebox. I converted a Chromebox into a low power "server" for hosting my own nextcloud. This works relatively well although affected by sporadic SSD I/O errors. I'm really curious as to how you have managed to unlock your cloudbook. A quick search on the internet has not returned any useful information. Would you mind sharing? A "cloudbook" is what used to be called a "netbook" -- a cheap WIndows S system rather than a chromebook running ChromeOS. It's easier to install Linux on a cloudbook than a chromebook still it's really a standard PC and you just have to work out how to boot from a USB stick and get working WiFi. Personally I gave up converting chromebooks to linux since the specs are too low, keyboard is non-standard with missing keys and its too fiddly. In fact if you wanted a chromebook converting a cloudbook to some version of ChromeOS is also possible (and would probably give you longer support than the real thing).
