Mandrake logon problems?

I just installed Mandrake 6.1 off the latest PC Answers coverdisk. All went well, couldn't tell the difference between that and RH6.0's installer (apart from the total lack of X server setup, expect you're meant to do that after you have a working console). When I get to the standard logon prompt I input root and enter as usual but it doesn't give me a password prompt just another logon prompt, hence I can't get into the system. This is also the case with a normal user and when I try booting from a floppy instead of the hdd (lilo is on the mbr). I can get into a bash prompt by using lilo single but that still gets me nowhere, I tried changing the root password and running lilo again from there. Any ideas? Could the good folks at PC Answers have slipped us a lemon I wonder? Does that mean the A120 to Clacton is some sort of Wormhole!?!?!? MJR, The block of text I guess you are refering to is attached to the end of all outbound email from the FT's email routers. Hello All I've just got a copy of this months PC Answers (Christmas 1999) and discovered to my delight that Linux Mandrake 6.1 and WordPerfect 8 are on the cover disc. Floppies

Hi, There are distributions that fit onto a single floppy - just don't expect to do much with them... (search Freshmeat.net) They might not have bash (more used shell), and they certainly don't have X so you can forget about GNOME/KDE or WM/E/whatever. Quite whether your 386 machine will survive the month after december I haven't the foggiest, and you'd have to bear in mind that with 8Mb RAM you'll (AFAIK) be lucky to erun X no matter what distro you use. If I were you I'd grab RedHat from somewhere (any vers) and do a custom-install. That way you can cut out devel packages (gcc and the like), GNOME and KDE, Apache, Postgres and numerous other things you simply won't use and it should fit into 120Mb. I know it can be done - I know someone who did it. And FWIW, dual-booting is quite easy and comes up as as an option in the RedHat 5/6 installer.
