New toys

Not strictly Linux related but has anyone seen the new Mac Mini that's recently been announced ? http://www.apple.com/uk/macmini/ Looks pretty sweet to me and I also find it quietly amusing that for less than twice the price of a boxed copy of Windows XP Pro you can buy an OS that is at least twice as good, plus the hardware to run it on.

Installing Linux mail

I attempted to put Mandrake 10.1 community Ed. on a disk the other night (just to see). Imagine that I have a brand new computer. Onto this machine I put Linux using a main stream distribution RedHat, Mandrake or suchlike. This box is to be used at home, and will be connected to the isp for a few minutes four or five times a week to send and receive e-mail, and sometimes for a little longer to browse the web. What do I need to do to achieve such a set-up? The mandrake distribution was useless for this! It offered to setup ISPs for every country but my own and crashed when I lied. I need some official way to connect to the isp and log in. I use wvdial on RedHat 9, but that only comes on the full set of CDs for 'drake. Some program to fetch the mail from the isp. (eg. fetchmail?) Something to read it and write replies. (I use pine!) A way of sending the mail when the box is connected, and a way of storing mail until the box is connected. Maybe something to kill spam. A web browser. As an ordinary user, I don't want to know about LANs, WANs, dial-on-demand, gateways, routers etc. unless such information is needed for such a basic set-up. I do have (or can get) two nameservers xx.xx.xx.xx and yy.yy.yy.yy, the phone number of the ISP (0845 xxxxxx), a username, and a password. This is the problem that an ordinary home user faces, when moving over to Linux, and I would be interested in the views of other subscribers to ALUG on suitable programs and their configuration. help! I seem to have lost my broadband connection

I seem to have lost my broadband connection which has been running trouble free for four months. It happened sometime on Tuesday. It was going OK in the morning but later in the day I couldn't connect and that has been the case since (I only turn it on when I use my computer rather than having it running continuously). The connection has been trouble free since the first day. Although a while back I did experience something similar but it was back up within 24 hours. (But at that time I didn't look into the 'guts' of my router to see what was actually going on). I have a D-Link DSL-504T. The carrier seems to be up but there is no connection. This shows in the router's log: Sep 8 12:00:06> Valid Configuration Tree Sep 8 12:00:10> Firewall NAT service started Jan 1 01:01:00> Bridge Created: br0 Jan 1 01:01:00> Bridge Interface Added: eth0 Jan 1 01:01:04> DSL Carrier is training Jan 1 01:01:14> DSL Carrier is up Jan 1 01:01:19> pppd 2.4.1 started by root, uid 0 Jan 1 01:01:19> Connect: ppp0 {--} I have tried resetting the router's firmware and setting up the connection info again but it still won't connect, even when I explicitly tell it to. It is almost as if the 'other end' is not accepting my login/password any more. I seem to remember coming across a login/password on the net you could use to check that your connection was working but I haven't been able to find it again. There could be several places where the error could be - router, telephone exchange (Norwich), ISP (Tiscali/UKFSN). Can some one explain what is happening and how I can get it working again. 3D Games with Suse 9.1

Have tried to get 3D games running in Suse 9.1 without success. Set 3D to Enabled but still no good. Have an ATI Radeon 8500SE Card and LCD Digital Monitor. Any help, hints or tips to get it working appreciated. Regards Stan

Why has 'ls -a' started mixing hidden files with the others?

When I issue an 'ls -a' or an 'ls -al' I expect all the hidden files (those with a . prefix) to appear before the others but my latest upgrade seems to have stopped this happening. I much prefer to see the hidden files separately, can I get the old sort order back somehow? Email Rules

Hi all, Being new to Linux I am am trying to find my way around and get everything sorted to my liking. One thing I can't seem to find though is how to set up message 'rules' in KMail. I would like to automatically have my messages from different places sent direct to their own mail boxxes. I do this ok in all other email clients I have used on the Mac and MS Windows, but can't seem to find it in Kmail/ Any help would be appreciated. TIA Peter

Introduction

Hi everyone, The name's Peter and I am a new'ish Linux user. I have 'tried' Linux a few times but never really seriously. My 'main' computer is an eMac running OS X 10.3.7 but I have some bits of software and hardware that won't run on a Mac, (amateur radio stuff (G0GSZ)) so I had to build a PC with Windows XP. When I was in Roys I picked up a copy of Linux Magazine which had a copy of Mandrake 10.1 on the cover DVD, so I installed this. I am very impressed. I have broadband via NTL through a cable modem and Belkin router. OS X and Linux detected this and set everything up almost automatically. Windows needed software installing!! At the moment I am only using Linux for email and internet browsing, but have tried other parts. I am experimenting as much as I can as time permits. I live in Bowthorpe and am a home user as I am carer to my disabled (MS) wife. I have been 'playing!' with computers since the late 70's, so have had a little practice / experiance. By the way, I am running the Gnome desktop that came with the installation. That's all, glad to meet you all. Regards Peter

Any openGL / Matrox / SuSE / experts here ?

I've been playing with openGL for a few days and having lots of fun drawing 3d views. Currently I'm just using the mesa (software) openGL library but I would like to get hardware 3d acceleration working. I've got SuSE 9.2 running on a 2.6Ghz HP with a dual headed Matrox G550. Anyone got any experience with setting up the hardware acceleration ? Google searches have not turned up anything simple/useful. Peter
