New Scientist Article

I was browsing in Safeways this morning when I came across an intersting article in New Scientist. It was about how the idea of Open Source software has started to spill over into other areas of commerce. An example given was Open Coke, a new brand of Cola for which the recipe is published under a licence similar the GPL. It also mentioned the OAL (Open Audio Licence) which is attempting to do something similar in the world of music. Ian

Thank you for your welcome mail, in fact since i joined i have been supprised by the activity. This being the first mailing list i have joined. Whilst not completely to new to computing i started playing around with the Acorn Electron ( perhaps a blast from the past). Then came a break for a few years. i started again in 1994 and have been using the dare i say it, the microsoft system. I had read a lot about Linux and started to get a hankering to try it out. My son who had recently installed Linux on his computer, The Mandrake 7.1 variation. Gave me a copy as a present. Due to pressure of work i have not yet had time to get really into it although i have read and purchased a number of books on elementary Linux. I could not hack it in 24 Hours as the title of one book suggested. Here i am a newboy or not so new really, wishing to learn something about the system. Without pushing my luck on the length of correspondence allowed could one of you learned gentlemen help. My system recently got its knickers in a twist so i decided to format the hard drive and start again, something i have done in the past. What is did not even think about at the time was that i would lose contact with my Linux partition. The system was dual booted via GRUB so i could either go into Windows or Linux. Now i can only get into windows which is not what i want. How can i format all of my hard drive and repartition the drive to enable me to reinstall Linux. Colin Davis

A request for the Association For Free Software

Hi all, I'm involved with setting up the UK's Association For Free Software and we're having some difficulties locating the following items: * A tame lawyer who at least knows what GNU/Linux is and would be willing to do occasional work for reduced rate (or free!) in exchange for an honorary title. * A Free Software accountancy package suitable for use in the UK. * A moon on a stick. As you can see, we need at least two of these, so any assistance you can give us would be appreciated a great deal. If you don't know, please ask your LUGs. You can find some more about us at http://www.affs.org.uk/ but it is early days yet. handbook for newbies

There's an interesting handbook on Linux that newbies may be interested in: http://rute.sourceforge.net/rute.html I had a cursory look (the server appears to be having problems tonight), and it seemed fairly informative. I understand that it came bundled with MDK8.1. It may be of interest to newbies and more experienced users alike. Another sendmail question....

Hi again.... I've got a user who wants a copy of all their received mail sending onto another account.. I was thinking of a .forward file but this sends the message and removes it from the server.. It's got to be a copy, so he can pick his mail from 2 different accounts..... Also, anyone know of an auto-responder for sendmail.. Simon

Sounds like the normal rubbish qmail apologists say without thinking. Any MTA will do quotas and you could force a limited number of recipients with any MTA. It just depends how many hoops one has to jump through. If you do use qmail, remember that it is restricted (non-free for Debian) and realise what you're getting into. -- MJR

Hi Guys, A few questions for Sendmail..... Is it possible to set the maximum recipients for an e-mail ? If so, any pointers please... Just I've got users sending a half meg file to 200 or so mail addresses!! Limiting mailbox size.. I believe it's done using quotas? Can anyone point me to a good resource to figure this one out.... Is there any other way other than with quotas..... I've been told that qmail does all of the above without any problems.. Any views on this ? Simon
