Meeting in Norwich, UEA, Sunday 24th Feb

Hi all, The next meeting will be taking place in Common Room A, Nelson Court at the University of East Anglia on Sunday between 2pm and 5pm. Directions to the uea are available from www.uea.ac.uk, and there are mapboards on the campus near the main car park that should get you to the common room easily enough. Post meeting drinks will happen in the Union bar, 5pm - 6pm, altho this is not a hard limit, and may well go on longer.. Rumour is that some beer in the Union is current £1 a pint... not that that should effect whether you turn up or not... ;-) Label your kit, if you're bringing it along, and post here to let us know what to look forward too... I will almost certainally be there, hangover from saturday permitting, and will be bringing my Pico Laptop, running debian unstable, and possibly my other Linux machine, if i've failed to get adsl going on it by then. It'll be my first meeting, and hey, this is my first meeting announcment... firsts all around.. Hope to see you there... J. PS.. please post this to other relevent places, if you can think of any.

Hi folks, I wouldn't normally post something like this, but this might be of interest to some of you. There is a systems administrator's position at a North West London ISP (who also provide specialist and hard-to-find PC and Mac components as well as fully built PCs - see http://www.webcoin.co.uk, http://www.pc500.net and http://www.spot5.com for details). Roles will include the installation, maintenance and monitoring of Linux servers (based around a mixture of Red Hat 7.2, Slackware 8.0, and Debian) as well as Sun Solaris 8 on Ultra-SPARC IIe's, some FreeBSD boxes (mainly workstations, though) and a wireless private network powered by Debian proxy servers/gateways. Other duties include supporting the development team with whatever requests they have for installing applications on the servers (such as Postgres and MySQL installations, Apache configuration, Exim and Sendmail configuration, etc). You will also be supporting clients by email and telephone and resolving any problems they may have with their web site or email. There will also be the occasion to visit Redbus for maintenance of the server hardware, or to install new kit. If you're interested, please email me directly off the list for more information. Kernel crashes?

Hmmm.... continuing problems since my last recompile (of 2.4.17). (i.e. these didn't used to happen...) 1) If I need to do anything that is intensive disk-wise (writing large files to disk), I am unable to do anything else, otherwise the system locks up. A symptom of this, for example, is that xmms loops about a second of the MP3 I'm playing. X does not respond to ctrl-alt-backspace, the system doesn't respond to ctrl+alt+del. 2) Although I have not changed my etc/fstab file, on booting, the system refuses to mount a vfat partition ("wrong fs type, bad superblock or wrong option"). If I mount it manually as root, I can access the partition (but only as root). I DID compile in vfat, DOS and UMSDOS support. Unfortunately, I cannot seem to view anything but the X server logs in /var/logs , as it says that the file is not viewable. How could I view these log files? Which one should I look at? Any parameters I can pass on at boot to enable more verbose logging? I'm VERY close to reinstalling / and chmod'ing my /home partition! I live 15 miles from kings lynn and 10 miles from swafam. Boot problems

Hi Folks Installed RH7.2 on a clean 3.2Gig drive this morning and promptly went about compiling a new kernel for a 586 CPU - Plugged the drive in to a P166 box when I got home, and now the thing hangs at the "Freeing memory" stage. Attempting to boot the old kernel just results in an instant reset, so I can't use that option.... Short of wiping the disk and doing a fresh install, does anyone have some suggestions ? A boot floppy is out as there is no floppy on this machine and the RH CD doesn't appear to have a rescue system on it. Regards, Paul.
