Trouble with gimp

Hi from another newbie! Does anyone know anything about gimp? I can't get it to do even the simplest transformations. Trying to rotate a selection, for example, produces no result other than a lot of hard disk activity which appears quite rapidly to fill up the partition in use, whether home or root; the only way out that I have found is to log off and start again. Is this a known problem? NT boot.ini

Stu I use the NT boot loader on my laptop. To boot Lilo from the NT boot loader you ned to do the following enter dd if=/dev/hd?? of=/ntdrive/linux.cnt bs=512 count=1 (where /dev/hd?? is the partition you installed lilo to and /ntdrive points to the nt C: drive) Edit your boot.ini file to look like the following (this configuration has linux as the default startup) [boot loader] timeout=30 default=c:\linux.cnt [operating systems] c:\linux.cnt="Linux" multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Windows NT Workstation Version 4.00" multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Windows NT Workstation Version 4.00 [VGA mode]" /basevideo /sos The boot/ini file has the system and readonly attributes so you will need to enter attrib -s -r c:\boot.ini before you edit the file. After wards enter attrib +s +r boot.ini to reset the file attributes. Linux Cobalt Raqs - bloomin' marvellous ;)

I just want to say how darned nice these machines are. I've been playing with a demo machine we've got in the office to decide whether it's worth using these as part of a co-located/reseller solution. I want one for myself :) It's running Linux 2.2.12C3 with an 18Gb hard drive, along with 512Mb of memory. Suprisingly, it's only using IDE for it's hard drive interface. Everything is administered via the web interface, but you also have telnet access along with root privaledges (although they say you could invalidate your warranty by modifying system files). It looks like it's running a customised version of RedHat. It will also allow installation via the web of .pkg files. The web server supports sanboxed CGI, Frontpage extensions, and plenty of other goodies. Web stats and quota management are all handled via it's web interface which customers can access via their control panel. The biggest surprise was it supports the Arkeia backup client which we use with a massive tape library system. The user can backup their own data, or the ISP/host can do it for them. The unit itself it's tiny - we could get loads of these into our racks in Telehouse. High loads

Thought you guys might enjoy seeing the highest load ever for a single website on a dedicated server (well that I've seen anyway) 11:37am up 28 days, 1:17, 3 users, load average: 50.17, 35.08, 24.95 At lunchtimes, the average is higher. This site gets on average 20 hits/sec for reference, and a a intesnive CGI/MySQL beast. Heardware is dual PIII-550, with RAID 5 SCSI and is a HP Netserver costing approx 7,500 quid. It also has around 640Mb of RAM, and a triple redundant PSU. We've already said it needs a new box. And for client confidality reasons, I'm not permitted to say which site it is, sorry! Experiences of Helix?

OK so we were bombarded with news releases from HelixCode announcing their distribution of GNOME yesterday. It looks real nice, I just wondered if anyone had any experiences good or bad with it (the Helix download processes and the environment itself)? Also, anyone know if an gnome app written under this release/1.4 release will still work under October GNOME? James. New Web Host

Folks, After many months of fruitless searching in the UK for a sensible (either) managed server or co-location deal for a box running Linux, we've given up, bitten the bullet and gone for a 2meg pipe of our own. We intend to offer domain hosting, web hosting using apache, email, php, MySQL, Perl, CGI etc. running on a SuSE 6.3 box for a basic price of a tenner-a-month. We want to use SuSE because a) we're familiar with it, and b) we want to do a trading partnership deal with SuSE. There are some complications, however! The principle one is lack of time on my part, and the fact that I'm out of the country. Another is that although we have a pretty good idea of what we need, and how to do it, some knowledgeable help would be appreciated. For instance, we will be going SCSI and RAID5 areas in which I have no experience on Linux. Lastly, this is a shoe-string start-up, and we can't afford to pay mega-bucks for an "expert". So, bottom-line: if an ALUG member near to Ipswich and willing to exchange some help and experience in exchange for beer and some free domain hosting or whatever is able to help, please shout. The kit will be here late next week, and it's a ground-up build. I have spare PCs to simulate dial-in, the DMZ and a network behind it for NAT and so on. I only have a short window to do this, as the pipe is scheduled to arrive at the main office in mid-April. Oh yeah, if anyone replies, please take this out of the list, to cut down the noise thereon. MS Word with Linux

Hi there, OK so I need to produce a lengthy report with screenshots and diagrams. I need to write it on Linux and produce the final product in Word for printing on an NT network. I'm wondering here how stable Word97 is running with WINE? StarOffice cannot get full compatibility even with straightforward text/styles I've found, so that's not a reliable option. Options anyone? What's your record for load average on a Linux box?

Mine is 60.91 after the Frontpage extensions running on a Debian box went haywire. We have now mounted the dump of 'top' on our wall as a record of the momentous occasion. Make sure you monitor, shtml.exe on any machine running FP to ensure it doesn't go tits up.
