Scary X problem

Hi all, I just noticed that when I'm connected to the net and startx a load of data goes out and then in again according to the lights on my modem, I have no great knowl edge of X and would like some pointers to whats happening if possible. Hi all, I'm going to cancel the venue for Alug now due to a lack of enthusiasm. If I'm wrong then let me know asap, It's just only two people have muttered anything to the effect that they are coming, Let me know though if its just everyone going on holiday/home in their uni easter break. I'm sorry if I sound pessimistic but it looks as though the current part of the mail archive is broken and everything looks grim. I'll start by giving you a resume of my computer in case it has a bearing on the trouble I am having with Caldera OpenLinux 2.2. Computer: Packard Bell Executive 200MHz (Upgrade - CenterHauls x86 Family 5 Model 4 Stepping 1 200MHz MMX), S3 (I think) 1Mb Graphic Card, 48Mb Physical Memory, American Megatrends Bios, version 100.05CP0R, dated 4/15/96, 4.3 Gb Hard Drive partitioned by FDisk into 2 equal size partitions - C and D, FAT16. Have no trouble with installing Linux, just rebooting it. Tried several times with PartitionMagic on Linux disk with no success and couldn't partition on D as I wanted, so bought on-line System Commander 2000, it too has, so far, been unsuccessful but there are signs (encouraging?). I was able to partition D, it said Linux is bootable, which it still isn't and also said that I must be sure to select Root Superblock choice - I would, but have no idea where this is located. In both cases, with PartitionMagic and System Commander, when I try to reboot Linux, it goes to the first OpenLinux page that I first saw when I installed it, with Boot at the top and (sometimes) a second line, but the next thing ALWAYS happens! It boots back to the opening Bios first-page. What am I doing wrong or is some part of my equipment not compatible with Linux? If you need other info, let me know, and I will do my best to supply it. ALUG6 Debian?

OK so the question has to be asked: Can someone bring along the latest Debian code? If 2.2 isn't out by the day, can someone master a cd of the latest unstable? The thought of installing "Slink and a half" then upgrading to unstable over a weekend doesn't settle well in my stomach. Needs to be CD - I'll not have my PC. James. Hope to come to your next ALUG meeting if possible. I live in Beccles, Suffolk and are urgently in need of Linux help. If I bring my computer and leads, what else do I need to bring? Monitor, etc. (I only have a small car!). I'm a computer-mad OAP, but absolutely clueless with Linux. If anybody lives near to me I would very much appreciate help and I would, of course, pay for your trouble, I shouldn't imagine, for an expert, it would take long.
