Hi, I've stuck the most recent photos of our last Alug meeting on my own, Red Hat server box running Zeus at:- http://www.bleeding-edge.net/alug/photos If things should go ahead for a meeting on the 19th July at UEA (at 2pm as a rough guide), Roger Whittaker has stated that it is very possible for him to do it at that date and time. Administrivia: List Outage

There is an electrical shutdown at UEA this weekend, so the Student Union mailserver will be offline for the duration. This happens once a year and should not actually be visible other than a slight delay on list traffic (but I'm just announcing it so that you know why it's slow). If it's like last year, services may be restored by Sunday lunchtime. MJR

Hi folks, Firstly, for those that witnessed the death of my laptop on the last meeting - it's now been replaced by PC World with a spanking new one and hope this one doesn't die on me (at least for the next three years until I buy a new laptop!) Secondly, I'm going to get in contact with Roger Whittaker from SuSE to arrange the presentation for our next meeting. How do I get rid of empty 15Mb Partition please?

Am getting on very well with Mandrake Lnx4Win - Linux on windows partition - but, on one of my previous abortive attempts to put Linux on a separate partition, I couldn't delete everything, and, despite going into Fdisk on Windows and in Linux I still have a 15Mb empty Partition. I have a 4.3 Gb HD with two Fat 16 partitions - 2047 on C:, 2063 on D: The empty partition is on D:, I have System Commander 2000 with graphic representation of the HD, and you can see the errant partition, but, if I try to amalgamate it in D:, it's got to be a Fat 32 drive, which I don't want. Any suggestions please? If I haven't made it clear enough, please e-mail with any queries. Everything works ok as is, but I don't like having 15Mb doing nothing that I can't delete! Terry

Hi all, I just found this in cam.misc thought you may be interested it will start around midday. Don't know where/what CB2 is though any ideas? I will try to find out later if poss. Hello everyone Richard Smith, of Cambridge Linux User Group, calling in. (our website is www.cam-lug.org.uk ) We have got a "Linux-fest" combined with "Installfest" this Sunday. The venue is CB2, where we will have the use of the basement (that's not as bad as it sounds - it is done-up for drama, poetry readings, recitals, etc!) This will be the second "Installfest" held by the group. The previous one last year was a great success, with a few people just turning-up and the CLUG group having a good chance to network computers together, do installs, get specialist software "up", etc. 'fraid we have all been busy doing our things, so here I am thinking "oh my god, got to put out some publicity fast...". So, if you want to bring along a computer and install Linux on it, that's the purpose of the "Installfest" part of the event. General advice: - definitely, make a backup of everything valuable on the computer - all you documents and so on. Sod's Law says if you don't make a backup, something is sure to go wrong! - evaluate the two main ways to put Linux on a system for the first time. One is to partition the hard disk, so that an unused portion becomes separate partition(s) for the Linux system. The other way is to install a separate hard disk dedicated to Linux. The latter is probably an attractive option if you already have a lot on you computer. Oh groan - I'm not even sure how much space a Linux distro needs these days - it's easiest to do a "full install", which takes up a couple of gig's, but a lean install will fit on just a few hundred meg's. I hope to be doing a quick presentation on the programming language "C". You may know that C is the "native language" of unix, and has been adopted for general use across quite a range of programming. It is used for major algorithm-writing now in mathematics (trust me - that's good!), science and engineering - which is where I met C. I will be outlining just the "special" parts of C - the ones which cause either a deep fear or euphoric liking for the language (there isn't much in between!). A week or two of BASIC at school is intended to be plenty enough grounding for this talk. Announce meetings

Where on Usenet should we announce the next meeting apart from uk.comp.os.linux and pcplus.linux? There seem to be so many new Linux newsgroups out there I'm not too sure where is appropriate. Cheers, BJ
