Andrew, can you upload a tarball of all the materials (the site, the logo master, etc) so that someone can take it off of your hands? Once again, the "subscribe to alug" forms should be killed immediately, as they are broken but produce no errors.

Forthcoming ALUGs: Pre-organisation

I was about to send a email to a few people about the next few ALUGs, but then I seemed to add so many people that I might as well use the list and involve everyone, I though. Next three meeting dates are: Aug 20, Sep 17, Oct 15 (all Sundays). August: can we return to Syleham again, John? Adam, will you be able to show off Zeus to us slobbering webmonkeys? September: We really really need a new location for this one. This is undergraduation weekend at UEA, which is a really really bad time to try to get a room or anyone with any time to organise anything. If it is at UEA, it would definitely need putting back a week. October: Martyn, if the speaker from SuSE is available, we should be able to arrange a room at UEA, maybe even one of the nicer lecture theatres, although we might have to beg contributions to meet the cost if they insist on charging. If he is available, can you mail me with what facilities he needs and I'll try to arrange this ultra-early so we can get extremely good publicity out there. The rest of you 'orrible lot could volunteer for various aspects of promoting these events, producing posters, taking a few to computer shops in your area and mailing the details to various websites and magazines. Most of that needs to wait for confirmed details, though. Anyone with time more immediately could step forwards to help with the website. As soon as we get *something* up, we'll start keeping a "volunteers" page where you can say you'll do stuff, to avoid duplication of effort and the bad memories of the veterans :)

ALUG web site

Hi, I've been giving some thought to the ALUG web site situation, and was wondering if anybody thinks that it might be a good idea to utilise the Slash code (http://www.slashcode.com) as the basis of the site that will enable several moderators to post articles, meeting stuff, etc. We're using it quite succesfully at my work as an internal news system for the company and it's working very well. A group of us post the main articles, which then allow other staff to add comments. Very impressive. Let me know what you guys think. Regards, Martyn

needing advice

Everyone Has anyone got any advice on modems for Linux, I did have a 28.8 modem which worked fine with my Windows95/Linux dual boot after exchanging with a friend i now have a 56.6 internal modem that doesn't work with linux. Are there any good sites on the net I could buy from I'm not too worried about the speed I just want it to work! On another subject any advice on setting up a web server or maybe a network since I have just bought a laptop with windows98 AMD K6 475 and would like to work it with my Cyrix Computer 300 processor which is at the moment running Red Hat 6.0. What are the options with this and is there one better than another and cost wise will I need anything extra as I don't have network cards or anything like that. Regards Scott P.S. Does anyone know of any Linux groups in Bury St Edmunds or local as I don drive and though I am not an expert i would like to learn more.

USB and Linux

Hi, I've got a AMD K6-III using an VIA Apollo chipset. I'm running kernel 2.4.0-test1. I'm trying to make my USB devices work. I've created /dev/usb/lp0 and /dev/usb/scanner Reading through the output of dmesg, it correctly reports finding my Agfa 1212U scanner and my Epson Photo 750 printer, But when I try printing or scanning, bugger all happens. When scanning I get a USB Bulk mgs timeout error. Any ideas??? The Sony PalmOS device is very recent, possibly not even on sale yet. It uses another incompatible add-on format, the expansion stick. If I find the details as I clean my in-tray tomorrow, unlikely as it is, I'll send them to the list. PS -- please trim quoted text!

2ND ANNOUNCE: ALUG, UEA, Tomorrow 1400!

Anglian Linux Users Group proudly present "ALUG The Underpromoted" Union House, UEA, Norwich 1400, Sunday 23 July Well, in the absence of the hoped speaker, this has degenerated into a meeting which will include: Network games xblast - 8-player multi-system bomberman-style lxdoom - the classic probably quake variants, if we get them working again probably some spiffy 3d stuff too and some SDL-based games, if we find some worth playing Games will either be on a local file server, or not need installing on client machines <g> ALUG website and email hosting where shall we put it? who will help? when do we move it? Next two meetings: Deadlines for confirming outside speakers so we don't end up in this state again. Appointing organisers? Directions should be on the website from past meetings at UEA, as this is in the same place. We have an 8-port hub available, but we are short of network cards and patch leads, so please bring them along with your machines and power cables. Discussion of any of the above points are welcomed on the mailing list alug(a)stu.uea.ac.uk
