Can the linux machine mount its own smb export? That's always a good start...
Another common problem is that Windows98 has a default for sending
non-plaintext
passwords, so you can't get into the linux machine once you have
found it. This can be fixed by installing the tweak from the Win98 cdrom in
\tools\mtsutil\ptxt_on.inf

Enough to blow the main trip switch a couple of times in quick succession,
