Configuring network card (again)

Hello all, I have been given the following info from someone at LNO on trying to get a 3com NIC to work (one that was given to me by an alug member at the last meet, as it happens). Can anyone confirm this is indeed a good thing to do? I tried for a while to get a Dlink card working, then changed it for this 3com one, which I'm not having much success with either. "3c509 isa cards are PnP jumperless nic's - they were designed to work with winders PnP (work great out of the box for that) in linux, it no worky-worky. you have internet access from a winders pc? if yes, then download disk 2 from here (this link is kicking my butt!!) \http://www.3com.com/products/en_US/detail.jsp?tab=support&pathtype=support&sku=3C509B-COMBO and boot the pc with a dos/winders boot disk - run the PNPDSABL.BAT utility to turn off PnP, then run 3c5x9cfg.exe to set the irq and mem addy you want (i like 10/300 )- after this, you should be good to go" I duly downloaded the disk2, copied it to /tmp on the linux box, started to reboot the linux box with a 95 startup disk, then bottled out and plopped the disk out before it could boot, in a fit of underconfidence at my noncomprehension. I have just writern a simple C++ XML processing app which I described for source forge as lxml is a simple XML processing filter, tags can be scripted to launch any application which will receive the XML between triggering tags this is piped to stdin of the launched applications, stdout is redirected by lxml to replace the triggering tags. unfortunately they said they would not host it (insufficient information) some further information is presented here This application will be accompanied with two further applications which together should provide session management for CGI based web application. running in an XML frame work. does any one have a location I can upload this to permanently, I am going to release it under the MIT style licence, ie people and compnays are free to use it as they like. Other than that, I have a Babani book on C (for when I have to hack and I can't tell my pointer from my elbow) and an old Linux book which came with my second distribution (right about when I realised that CDs in books are really out of date when you buy them). -- MJR

Go on then! After last night's flame, I thought you could all recommend me good books to read to tell me how basic things work. I'll then compile a little list and we could have it on the homepage for other beginners to consult. Next thing you know I'll run out of questions to ask and will be completely brilliant. I've got O'Reilly Running Linux. Any others? (Writing Linux Devices Drivers sounds well heavy stuff, David, and may well go above a newbie's head?) Jen.
