If it's Free, you might be able to use one of the other sourceforge-code-based sites like savannah.gnu.org which are less overloaded, although sf is supposed to have good caching etc. -- MJR

Knowing the supposed similarity of these two distros I have to wonder if there's a link. Anyone managed to recompile the kernel under 'drake 8? (PS: I hope this is the address I'm subbed from, apologies to the moderator if not). Richard

File systems and Kernel recompile

I eventually bit the bullet and recompiled my kernel to version 2.4.4, and guess what, IT WORKED, well I was surprised Having done this I have some questions. 0)I missed a module out when I compiled the kernel, how do I compile just that module? 1)Would people recommend a 2.2 or 2.4 kernel for mission critical systems which need high availability? 2)What would people recommend in the way of journelling file systems? I think that was all. Thanks to all who advised me on my earlier kernel thread. RedHat 7.1 module compile problems

Large text in Mandrake 7.2!?

Since Linuxday when Mandrake 7.2 was kindly installed for me, I have re-installed it more than 20 times trying to get the ideal (for me) combination. It was great to at last be able to install a distro myself after all the one's I had tried in the past unsuccessfully! Included in these was Mandrake 7.0, which I tried again to see if I could install this, but the same result, installed ok, but couldn't boot back into Linux. I wonder if it's just coincidence but 7.0 had Lilo only, whereas 7.2 has Grub and Lilo, Grub has worked for me every time, could this be the reason? One query about 7.2, sometimes the menu, root dialog etc comes up with the text about half-an-inch high! Why does this happen and how can it be solved? Programs still work as usual correct size, but, of course, having text that large is awkward! Thanks Terry

I am thinking that I might upgrade my kernel to 2.4 from 2.2.18. Is this a good idea? are there any major problems I should watch out for? When I do make menuconfig what options can be removed because they aren't going to be used on my athlon, other than th obvious? I also want to have all periferals configured to be configured as modules, is this easy enough? Also how much has it changed since 2.2* ?
