new kernel install

Happy spring, all! I've celebrated by doing my first kernel upgrade. Now, I have gone through all the make stuff, and ended up at make bzimage, with the intention of sticking the image on a floppy for testing. However I've come up with the message "warning: kernel is too large for standalone boot from floppy". How advisable is it to just go ahead and "make install" at this stage? I have copied vmlinz-2.2.18 and config-2.2.18 to vmlinuxOLD and configOLD. Also, is "make bzlilo" like "make install" but also tells lilo about the new kernel image? Thanks! Jen.

Can anyone help with a KDE2/Debian 'Testing' error ?

I have recently upgraded my Debian Potato system to 'Testing' and, as that includes KDE2, KDE1 has been upgraded to KDE2 (2.2.2-14). In trying to run some applications (only a few) I get the following message: relocation error: /usr/lib/libkdeui.so.3: undefined symbol: styleChange__8QTool It's always the same message with the same symbol. Does anyone know why this should happen? Barry Samuels

I am a long retired person and began delving into computers in 1979 with a Tandy TSR1 - I then lived in Australia and wrote a programme in Basic to do the accounts for a garage I was running there. I used LDOS which was far superior to MSDOS 2.11 that I had to switch to when I bought an Apricot. I am not mad keen on either the ethics or practice of Mr Gates (nor that of Murdoch either) but I am aware that my efforts against them will make little difference. My first purchase of Linux was some 6 years ago (SuSE), the the second about 3 (Definite) and the third 2 months ago - SuSE again and, unlike those previous conversion efforts, I intend to make it this time. This email comes to you via the "auld enemy" because I have problems, but they will be overcome! I realize that for a while I might have to put up with using both systems, but I like the idea of choice, and not being dominated by the practices of one man. Kind Regards Leonard Chandler

newbie question - getting the latest PHP 4 and MySQL for Suse 7.1

I'm having problems figuring out how to get hold of suitable packages of the latest PHP and MySQL for Suse (7.1) Can't see anything obvious on the Suse site. If I simply go the PHP and MySQL sites for the downloads I figure this may mess up the Suse configurations for these applications, upset it's YAST package manager and generally blow up in my face (?) ...... On a different but related note I see a lot of stuff (such as RPMs, tutorials) that directly relates to Red Hat. Consequently, as a total novice I wondering whether I would be better off moving over to Red Hat ...ok, Suse was painless to install but I'm feeling somewhat paralysed now by not wanting to (at this stage at least) install from non-packaged sources. You may find it useful to save a copy of the outputs of dmesg and lsmod before you install the new kernel- useful in choosing modules, etc. during the actual install, and useful for troubleshooting afterwards. I tried it before- I didn't really like it all that much, I forget the reason why.
