Why won't RH 7.2 mount my CD?

Hi! I'm another newbie (to ALUG not Linux) and here I go starting with a plea for help! I've just updated one of my machines which previously ran RH 5.X then 6.0 to RH 7.3. Well, actually, I didn't update - as always I cleaned the disk right down, low-level formatted, re-partitioned and did a completely new installation. Most things run fine BUT I can't seem to mount a CD. I know there's nothing wrong with the drive because I did the installation from it! My Turn For An Intro

Hi, Well, finally got round to subscribing. Been using Linux since RedHat 6.2, but my distro of choice at the moment is Mandrake. My name is Matt Parker (though on Usenet I'm known as Cowboy Bob - don't ask unless you're into a certain US post-punk band with an infamous name - if you are then you already know!!). I work as a Senior Java Developer at a company that makes software for the advertising industry in Diss, Norfolk - though I live in Norwich. I did my stint at the UEA doing my Comp Sci masters thesis with active shape models as part of the, now famous, VisiCast project. At work I develop on Solaris, so together with that and my couple of years Linux experience I hope I can help some of the newbies out and maybe learn a thing or two for the "old" masters. Matt

Thank you for your welcome mail, in fact since i joined i have been supprised by the activity. This being the first mailing list i have joined. Whilst not completely to new to computing i started playing around with the Acorn Electron ( perhaps a blast from the past). Then came a break for a few years. i started again in 1994 and have been using the dare i say it, the microsoft system. I had read a lot about Linux and started to get a hankering to try it out. My son who had recently installed Linux on his computer, The Mandrake 7.1 variation. Gave me a copy as a present. Due to pressure of work i have not yet had time to get really into it although i have read and purchased a number of books on elementary Linux. I could not hack it in 24 Hours as the title of one book suggested. Here i am a newboy or not so new really, wishing to learn something about the system. Without pushing my luck on the length of correspondence allowed could one of you learned gentlemen help. My system recently got its knickers in a twist so i decided to format the hard drive and start again, something i have done in the past. What is did not even think about at the time was that i would lose contact with my Linux partition. The system was dual booted via GRUB so i could either go into Windows or Linux. Now i can only get into windows which is not what i want. How can i format all of my hard drive and repartition the drive to enable me to reinstall Linux. Colin Davis

Problem with linux mandrake 8.1 box on boot

Hope someone can advise on the following. I went to boot one of our linux mandrake 8.1 boxes today and received the following error messages: Loading reiserfs module Mounting /proc filesyste, Creating root device Mounting root filesystem hda5: bad access: block=128 count=2 end_request: I/O error, dev 03:05 (hda), sector 128 read_super_block: unable to read superblock on dev 03:05 read_old_super_block: try to find super block in old location hda5: bad access: block=16, count=8 end_request: I/O error, dev 03:05 (hda), sector 16 read_old_super_block: unable to read superblock on dev 03:05 mount: error 22 mounting reiserfs flags Freeing unused kernel memory: 708k freed Kernel panic: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel I appears the partition hda5 has become corrupt somehow. Is there a way to repair it without reinstalling. I am keen to get the files of the partition if possible. There is a series of log files started called panic, which list a panic because exim.conf file can't be opened, each time at exactly when my backup is set to run. I haven't yet got exim set up correctly running and haven't had time to look at it. I've done the above to trap the error messages that can't get through. I'll keep you posted on the breathtaking results. (I assume that if the logfile doesn't exist it will be created? And I'll just blindly trust you on the "2>&1" thing.....) Thanks! Jenny.

Other than that, this says to me that there is something to do with ReiserFS (i.e. it messed up the unmounting)- hence why ME can boot and linux cannot. perhaps boot onto a gnu floppy like Tomsrtbt http://www.toms.net/rb/ and fsck hda5, although I'm not sure if it supports reiserfs, since I do not use Reiserfs myself.
