This is the automated ALUG IRC meeting reminder sent to remind you that there is an IRC meeting tonight (Monday) at 8.00pm. The meeting takes place on the irc server irc.alug.org.uk in the #alug channel. Most IRC clients should allow you to get there with the commands "/server irc.alug.org.uk" and "/join #alug". Hi, I have just upgraded to Broadband on Freeserve. I use Mandrake 8.2 and would like to know if someone is using the Alcatel SpeedTouch USB modem with Mandrake 8.2 or even Mandrake 9.0 (as I would like to upgrade to 9.0 soon). A brief guide about setting it up will be greatly appreciated. Govind

cross-over cable -thanks everyone

once more top advice from the ALUG:-) As I write this the crossover cable that I bought is performing and I'm installing slackware from one machine to the other. Thanks - I would have bought a cable before but the post is so erratic where I live that I couldn't wait, will look at switches etc in near future - expect more dumb questions...... cheers everyone, Glen

Draft: Call For Talks

Hi all, I'm going to publish this just as soon as we have the remaining dates, unless someone objects. Improvements are welcome. Note that the first Norwich discussion meeting has been pencilled in for next Sunday -- who's going to be there? Many thanks to the venue organisers (Rob, John, James) for agreeing to dates so far ahead... hopefully we can get them into all the magazines, local papers, etc and won't have to vary them too much. The extra advance warning should help with promotion and attendances, too. In other news, Peterborough LUG's meeting is this Thursday evening. They're having an "open forum" session, much like most of last year's ALUG meetings. Anyone from A47 or A17ish wanting a lift there and back, email me. --- Begin draft: The Anglian Linux User Group needs speakers and presentations! We're interested to hear from anyone who wants to speak about a project they're involved in, or some other aspect of GNU and Linux that is of interest to the rest of ALUG. It's hoped that we can have two types of talk at each venue: the first sort is an introductory type of talk, covering such things as what a piece of software or a project is, what it does, how to install it and get started using it, and so on; the second is a more "in-depth" technical talk aimed at "veteran" users who are interested in how things work and how to improve them. If there is interest, displays may also be offered for the time between talks, when practical help will also be available. The venues have different facilities, including projection equipment, microphones and stages, so please wait for your talk's venue to be decided before preparing that multimedia extravaganza. It is expected that most talks will happen at the Syleham and Elmswell meetings, while the Norwich meetings will be more social discussions. The group is also always interested to hear from people with venues available for ALUG, especially in North Norfolk or Cambridgeshire. Checking the integrity of a CD

Hi, I have recently obtained a set of CDs from a friend and would like to check their integrity against the md5 ISO checksum I have obtained from the original supplier in order to reassure myself that no errors were introduced during the burning process. Is it possible to directly check the md5 checksum of a ready made CD or do I need to use CD burner software to create an ISO image of it first and then checksum that? Ian.
