[Alug]Norwich meeting schedule.

I would like to have regular sunday meetings in Norwich every two months, held regularly on the last weekend of the month (i.e. roughly mid-way between the mid-monthly evening meetings). 1. Syleham is planned for every third month so every six months there would be a possible overlap. But, provided we don't choose the same date, I suggest that it is worth trying out since the extra mileage means that for some people Syleham is just that bit too far south of Norwich and for others Norwich is a little too far north compared to Syleham. 2. Use of UEA facilities with bandwidth would be great if it could be arranged regularly and reliably. If not then a reasonable venue that happens is better than a great venue that doesn't. **If there is anyone on the list who is able to book a room at UEA please contact me.** Can people who work at UEA book rooms? As has been said before, you don't need to do anything except make the booking. No organising, no responsibility to take, nothing... unless you want to do more of course :-) Any comments on these suggestions? Syd

I did only have the one brief attempt. I'll try either a USB or PS2 mouse then to free the serial port, or see if I can easily get the usb-serial doobry. [Alug]"From Boot to Halt" talk, Norwich sunday 28th September.

At the last meeting it was suggested that we have the 'From Boot to Halt' talk at the next Norwich sunday meeting (2pm Sunday 28th September, Nelson Room, The Billy Bluelight, Hall road) MJR has offered to start it off: " I'm happy to give an overview/introduction talk (kernel startup, hand-off to init, types of init, runlevels, common tasks, that sort of thing) and present a poster on some aspect no-one else wants to do." It would be great if there are one or two other people who are willing to join in with information on other aspects of the boot process, especially anyone involved in development or doing any other "fun stuff with start-up and shutdown". An A3 or 2xA4 poster would be helpful too. Some useful and interesting topics would include ways to handle power management/UPS, particularly as more people move to using laptops. Something on APM/ACPI for example? Anyone who is interested, please respond either to the list or privately to either myself and/or Mark. In any event, the introductory talk on the boot process will take place at this meeting - further details and announcement to follow. Syd

Hi The Do Different Computer Show that was discussed on IRC has been cancelled. However as a replacement a Spectrum and SAM Coupé computer Show called ORSAM 2003 is to be held in Norwich. At the show I would like to have a computer (Linux?) with a webcam and irc server running so that people in North America and others who could not turn up could take part in the show. Maybe a Spectrum or SAM could be connected to it take part in the IRC chat. I could provided a broadband connect only a few metres from the venue, a webcam, a computer and a spectrum. What I do not have is Wireless hardware, knowledge or much time on the day, though I will give what I can. [Alug]Linux IP Camera... Ideas on a postcard

All, I have often looked in awe at IP Cameras, and we have recently done a job for a customer involving some, but they are sooo expensive, well more than £150. I like the Dlink DCS 1000 et al. I would like to build one using a spare miniITX box I have and a Logitech Web Cam Pro I have USB. Couple of questions! 1. Does Linux support Logitech Web cam pro 2. Is there console web cam software that I coule use to upload to a local apache server? 3. Is there a premade distro designed for this use, or could I make one somehow? I guess the ITX box needs to do the following! 1. Support the webcam 2. Have a NIC 3. Run apache for the images 4. All run off a compact flash card, no moving parts and all that! err, I think thats it. Any how, let me know what you think. Regards, Michael

My local telephone exchange is becoming broadband enabled at the end of September and I am working on the assumption that I will be able to use it (BT's site says I MAY). I have a firewall running (Endoshield - very easy to set up) and have just changed it to Bastille which seems to be working (grc.com). Bastille recommends 'psad' which is also now installed. I had Snort and Samhain installed but do I need these? Do I need Packet Mangling enabled in the Kernel which it isn't at present? There's a story on /. at the moment which talks about a letter sent by one John Salin to the USPTO regarding software patents. The author of this article suggests mentioning this to MEPs. (forwarded mail at bottom) I've confirmed this with a phone call to the European Parliament Office in Ireland. They said that this happens when a directive is very contraversial or when too many amendments are proposed. The directive will go back to the committee stage for some more work, and a new version will go to the plenary on either 22nd of September, or early October. October is more likely. On the phone, she said that it is *definitely* withdrawn. A small but perfectly formed gathering - Keith, Syd, Mark and Paul. Very interesting and enjoyable natter ensued. Because of many and various other monthly events (NPCUG, RUNG, PLUG), I propose that the meets be on the seconfd thursday of each month from now on. Next Norwich evening meet on thursday 10th July. Still some debate about the venue - to be confirmed. Regards Syd
