That'll be a 25 way serial port then not a parallel port. That's what they all used to look like until recently when they tend to all be 9 pin ones. Most of the pins in the 25 pin ones aren't used any more (or ever really especially for RS232). [Alug]External modem on laptop

Hi list: Any idea if you can plug a modem into a parallel port and expect it to work? The laptop in question has but one serial port, which is needed for the external mouse. The modem cable has a double-end at the laptop end, with both a serial plug that fits and a parallel that doesn't as it is the wrong gender. Using a gender-bender and setting modem port to /dev/lp0 I got no response. Jen

You will have to 'host' via apache or similar to avoid the other files. [Alug]Browser URL question

Because I often use my browser (Opera, Mozilla) for viewing pages that are stored locally, I set the URL of the home page to be file://localhost/home/gerald/ so that I get a display of that directory whenever the browser starts up. That works well enough for me, except that all of the hidden directories and files are shown at the top of the list and there are lots of them, which means that I have to scroll down quite a way to get to the things that I actually want to click at. Is there some sort of command or environmental variable that can be adjusted (in Opera/Mozilla or somewhere else) that keeps hidden things hidden in the browser's display of my home directory? Any ideas, please, anyone? Cheers, Gerald.

[Alug]Port 135 probes

Hi Folks, I have just checked my firewall log and found it packed full of Port 135 probes. It looks like they have been occurring two or three times per second from a wide variety of IP Addresses throughout all today. Have any other ALUGers been getting inundated with these probes as well? Ian.

Have a look at apt-zip. You run apt-zip on the slow machine and it writes a script to download the required packages which you then take to the fast machine. After downloading the packages you take them to the slow machine and run apt-zip again to install them. It was originally written to use zip disks but you can now specify any storage location you want AFAIK.
