It's exactly as Brett said. You could try typing
/sbin/modprobe ehci-hcd
/sbin/modprobe usb-storage
You need to be logged in as root.

What does the output of dmesg show you?
To install lsusb on Gentoo, type
emerge usbutils
It's available on other distros as well, but it's been so long since I
used Redhat I've forgotten what th epackage is called.
