Hey Ben, sorry for the late post, yeah I've had a look at ubuntu but havn't tried the live cd yet. It's an old-world G3 thats been sucking most of my time, so i'm not sure it would work. I've got debian installed and working with a 2.4 kernel, but main problem now is getting X to work wiv an old fixed refresh rate monitor. Got the ati drivers going the other day, but still no joy. I had the machine working with an old copy of Yellowdog (RedHat) and tried just copying the xfree86.config file.. - If anyone thinks they can help lemme know and il'll send in specs. Gonna give debian/ubuntu a go on my powerbook once i have the money to hookup a new harddrive, i 'll need to dual boot as I need a mac partition for my work. As for airport extream, is it that the drivers are still closed source? I've been looking into getting an original airport card but the prices on ebay are mad!! Right, assuming kernel 2.6.x... $ modprobe ehci-hcd $ modprobe usb-storage I can't remember if that's the same for 2.4.x, I know it got changed at some point, but I can't remember the exact point. And marvel as you get SCSI disks ;) Basically, USB multicard readers present themselves as 1 (or more) usb mass storage devices, that are then treated as SCSI devices. My 6 in 1 presents itself as 4 devices, for example, one for each different shaped hole. NetGEM Netbox - modem isdn network (dsl) version

Hi everybody, I found some threads on this list talking about Netgems Netbox (connected via ISDN, MODEM or Network) ... Anybody has some informations about hacking the box or getting custom firmware ... I have one with 56k modem ... maybe it is a neutral box (maybe developers one) ... I'm very happy about getting every information available ... I'm little frustrated about aswers from netgem ... not giving any internal information about the box ... Last time I saw someone who sells the box on TV shopping channels ... maybe it was TRLshop in germany ... 150 EURO :-) ... I bought one on ebay for about 39 EURO *g* It will be nice to startup a project ... if some people will join it ... Thanks to the community Martin

Spring Kit Meet

Present: Jonathan (Noodles), Mark (slef), Brett (iDunno), Martijn (mak), James (mChicago), Ashley (Ashley), Peter Onion (PeterO), Gareth (flux), Mike, Rob, flux' brother Graeme, James W, and Eli/elspeth (sunflowerinrain) Mike's crimson machine which has refused installs of Redhat, Mandrake, etc. suffered various attempts to install Debian unstable which resulted in it booting into Win98. Brett re-partitioned and de-bootstrapped it and got almost all the way through the process of getting a working Debian before running out of time. Noodles got rid of some of his collection of junk ("anyone want a Psion 3A?") and acquired a printer. Peter's Elliot 803 emulator - the Noise Machine - was much admired, as was J's embryonic museum. Martijn/mak did a Xen demo of virtual machines - VNC onto Fedora and Debian; he also took mugshots with the clever idea of adding names, so we know who we are now. We had tea, a filter coffee machine and an expresso machine, and many kinds of cake and biscuit, including Rob's home-made bara brith (tea bread, boyo) which was more fruit and nut than cake. Suddenly time was up and we had to clear up and leave in a hurry. Some people went for fish n chips then on to the Fat Cat, where a Lisa joined us to watch geeks at play; finally a few went to see Constantine and the rest went home. Good day.

detecting power failure

Hello ALUG, Does anyone know if there will be a log entry somewhere on my Debian system (or anything else) which will tell me if it suffered a power failure over the weekend? I've just noticed that the web and database servers on my workstation (I use them for testing code) were running when I came in this morning and I'm sure I stopped them both on Friday. Everything else about the machine is normal. Cheers, Richard

Anyone know what the implications of lo (loopback interface) not working?

I have Fedora server running behind an ADSL router that is set to allow a default LAN DMZ address matching the servers fixed internal IP. Now, until the other day (this has worked for weeks), I could see the server from the internet just fine, then it must have dropped off on a bootup one morning. The only problem I can find with the networking is the fact that the lo interface seems to be broken for some reason. eth0 works just fine and I can access the server on the LAN, just not through the router. Which by the way is a Netgear DG834G and has not been fiddled with in any way i.e I haven't changed the config at all lately. Thanks for listening :) Si. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. "pharming"

Hi Folks, I've just read a Guardian article this morning about the "pharming" scam -- unlike "phishing" where you click on a real-looking URL in an email, with a false one hidden behind it, this depends on a rogue program infiltrated into the computer which re-directs a genuine URL to a false address which then mimics the real one. See: http://www.guardian.co.uk/online/news/0,12597,1442474,00.html The article concludes: In a reversal of current internet security protocols, banks may attempt to tackle the virus by proving their own identity to customers when they visit their sites. I would have thought the simple solution was for people just to use the IP address, e.g. http://155.136.80.71/EbankLoginStuff instead of http://www.rbs.co.uk/EbankLoginStuff for the Royal Bank of Scotland. Or am I missing a trick?
