A few bits and bobs

Folks, I'm having a bit of a clear out and so far have found a couple of things that I don't really need: - 4 x Various P3 processors (http://david.reynoldsfamily.org.uk/bits/processors.jpg ) Price: Free to a good home - Freecom USB DVB-T Stick (http://david.reynoldsfamily.org.uk/bits/dvbt_usb_long.jpg | http://david.reynoldsfamily.org.uk/bits/dvdt_usb_closeup.jpg) When I played with this it wasn't working very well with Linux, although I believe progress has been made. Ubuntu Updates

I have a customer with a laptop from Linuxemporium, with ubuntu pre-installed. I think it is gutsy, but will have to confirm that. She is using a wireless network (WPA-PSK), with broadband connection. The problem is with online updates. When logged in, a message informing of new updates is shown. If accepted, the list of headers downloads correctly. But, on clicking install, nothing happens. If I try running apt-get update / upgrade, update works fine, but upgrade reports that resource [ESSID xxxx} could not be accessed. However, if I run apt-get from an SSH login, or a virtual terminal, everything work fine. Program which can print a part of an image - any ideas?

I want to be able to select part of an image (a JPEG by default but I could convert it) and print a selected (by marquee?) part of the image. At the moment I can't find any easy way to do this either with Windows programs (I have Adobe Photoshop Elements running in Vmware) or in Linux. It seems such an obvious thing to want to do. -- Chris Green

We tried Micawber's Tavern last month and it was nice. Some people, though, are a bit concerned about the difficulty of parking there. This month we will try The Alexandra Tavern (16 Stafford Street, NR2 3BB, 01603 627772, http://www.alexandratavern.co.uk/). It's a very nice pub with good beer and food. It may be possible to park in West Pottergate or even in Douro Place where ALUGgers usually park for The Reindeer. On the top of our agenda this month will be possible venues. VPN thoughts

Hello list people, I thought I'd throw this one over to you for some feedback. I have to set up a vpn both locations are using Netgear DG834g routers. The main location has a Ubuntu Hardy box being used as a samber server for a small handful of Win XP/Vista and Ubuntu boxen. There is a XP box used as a print server (I know cups would be better but it's a location thing). Basically they need file shares across a vpn with printing handled locally at each location. What is the best way of attacking this, the hardware route using routers or using tunneling protocols? Cheers, BigJohn

Debian apt dependencies

Can anyone tell me why debian apt-get insists on installing apache when I only want to install php5 and php5-cgi (I already have lighttpd installed and prefer to use that)?
