Hosting/ssh/news server recommendations wanted

I currently have all my web hosting (very little), mail and usenet news from Gradwell Dot Com, in general I'm happy with the service but they do seem to be becoming a specialist VOIP supplier with the web hosting playing second fiddle so I'm looking for alternatives so that I can spread the risk a bit and/or be ready to move if I feel the need. I realise it's quite a spread of services I'm after so maybe there aren't any other 'Gradwells' out there that can provide it all in which case I may go for separate suppliers. I suppose that at least minimises the chaos if something goes wrong. What I'm after is:- A good, fast, no binaries, NNTP server. Preferably associated with an ssh shell hosting service so that I can run a command line news reader with near instant response from the NNTP server. When I moved to Gradwell it was a revelation how fast their service was compared with anything that accessed the NNTP server across the internet. Mail forwarding under my control in some shape or form. Currently most of our (family and small business) mail is read usign the IMAP servers at Gradwell except for mine which I forward to the machine where I have the ssh account and read it with mutt there. Hosting with ssh access. I'm wondering if a virtual server might make sense, they're available for a tenner a month (or less?) now. Does anyone here have experience of virtual servers? Any recommendations (or otherwise) for good hosting would be welcome, one major criterion is fast interactive ssh access as I do all of news and mail handling via ssh to 'their' server. Oh, one final "nice to have" requirement - while Googling around yesterday I saw one hosting site offering ssh access *plus* a web to ssh interface so you could get to the command line from anywhere with a browser. I.e. you wouldn't have to install putty onto a friend's machine to read your mail. -- Chris Green

AAO Sleep Button with 2.6.29

Hi ALUG, My kernel on my Acer Aspire One got upgraded to 2.6.29 recently and since then my sleep button (Fn+F4) somehow does a suspend to disk when pressed. This is quite clever but also quite annoying as I have a carefully crafted Fluxbox configuration which does various useful jobs like logging me out of my Jabber client and then doing suspend to RAM when I press Fn+F4. Does anyone have any ideas how I may be able to regain control of my sleep button? I tried looking through /etc/acpi and /use/share/acpi-support but there doesn't seem to be anything in there to do with the sleep button. XFedora?

Has anybody had a play with XFedora on an Xbox? I was given an Xbox, note that this is not a 360, and decided that I might be able to use it to play things DviX files which might be stored on this PC or on my wife's laptop. So I removed the original 10GB(?) drive and put in a 40GB drive which XFedora has used. I had also tried various other distros such as XDSL and Gentoox but they only seemed to install in an F: partition which I didn't want. I have also installed a modchip so that it can now boot without needing a modded game cheat. My query is this. XFedora appears to be running version 4 of Fedora so does anybody know if it would be possible, and worthwhile, to update it? Before everybody jumps in and says that it's easy to update, I should point out that I don't currently have a mouse on the box as I only have one USB adapter and that's taken up with a keyboard. I have ordered another adapter but that's winging it's way over from China now. If I 'startx' the system comes up fine (I'm not yet clear on how I will want to play any files on the system but if my wife wants to do this, I don't think she'd be keen on running things from a command line and hence the possible need for X-Windows) but due to the lack of a mouse, I can't click on the Update icon on the taskbar. I can connect it online and Firebird will reach the outside world but if I try to run 'yum grouplist', it can't find any repositories. I suspect that's because it's an old version. Am I right in that thought? So if somebody could point out how I can manipulate X-Windows without a mouse, that would be good too. P.S. If the moderator is reading this, apologies for sending it through first time from the wrong email address!

So, how do I uninstall version 9 (which is the one I actually have with this distro package whatever it says) before upgrading? I have looked in Synaptic but the only version that comes up is 10 now. iPlayer

Following on from Ted a question of my own. Every time I watch something using iPlayer (in Firefox) the sound is fine but the video is just that little bit behind. Trying to watch Dr Who a day or so ago the video also stuttered more than usual. Why is this and can I do anything about it? Having hunted around on various forums I'm beginning to supect the answer is 'well, no actually.' Thanks. A Convert

Hi All I'm Kev an ancient wannabee geek who used to work in electronics and then IT doing application support and a little bit of development of software/web development. Had to leave the tech side and in fact stopped work for a while to look after my wife who suffered with a long time kidney problem before passing away in January this year. In the past when my brain worked I was MCSE qualified but feel better now. Had a passing interest in linux since the early Red Hat distro's but not had time to do anything serious. Since the advent of Gutsy have had a linux box around and now use a Hardy as my main box. As I theoretically have more time on my hands I will be trying to learn Linux seriously but am currently at the stage where a little knowledge is dangerous, so expect the normal really stupid noob questions/comments for a while. I am in the process of kick starting the tech/geek side of my brain by running a Hardy server as a dev box while I teach myself new IT skills such as linux administration, programming (java, python etc.), and web design (xhtml, css, php). The eventual goal will be to actually make fortune so I can give it away. Currently based in Thetford. Kev
